Loved it! Best game of its specific genre.
I don't know if you are aware of the Tactics spinoffs but there was a GBA game called Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced that was pretty good, not better then the original but still good...it didn't have anything to do with the original story wise though.
Square is making two new Final fantasy Tactics games...one for the PSP which is basically going to be sort of a port of the PS1 version or maybe even a sequel and one for the DS which will be a sequel to Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced.
As for the question about getting the Bard...I don't remember but there are tons of sites that break the game down to every detail.

Man.....one of the best strategy RPGs EVER....i still sometimes put the cd in my comp and play it,of course not the same feelin' as when you're holdin' old PSone joypads but WTH..better then nothin' i guess.Cadet already gave ya advice on details 'bout the advancement and stuff so i dont have anythin' more to add.
Oh and my recommendation to you would be to try to find "Brigandine" and "Vandal hearts" also awesome games for PSone, great strategy RPGs.

I hated that game. I couldn't even get past the first real fight.

One of my Top Ten Games ever. FF Tactics was played, by me, for almost 5 years.
