i enjoyed, "this hour has 22 minutes" way back when. mercer, jones, walsh and thomey.
it was original, funny and loved the rants mercer did.
then the guy moved to toronto, and became CBC's poster boy for everything.
the "rick mercer report" is 22 minutes without the rest of the cast.
same thing, only not as funny.
he did that crappy show, "made in canada" and that just went on and on, and was not funny at all.
and now every time there is some sort of one off special on CBC, he's hosting it.

sorry, but i'm sick of him, not a funny guy anymore, and i hate how the CBC sticks with the same tired out talent over and over, the only good thing they've done lately is "the hour" with strombolopolis.

anyway, that's my rant. anyone else sick of rick mercer????

don't get me started about "little mosque on the prairie", save that for another thread maybe.

He had his moments, but yeah, I haven't watched the Report for ages now.

I've only seen one episode of Little Mosque, and it was okay I think, but I couldn't get over the fact that it felt like a ripoff of Corner Gas, which is the best comedy, Canadian or otherwise, in a long time IMO. I've been criticized for saying this, but in a way it just felt like CBC saw what CTV was getting out of Corner Gas and asked themselves 1) How can we do our own Corner Gas and 2) What's the hot topic right now? So they smashed together Corner Gas and Islam and hoped for the best.

Yup, I'm with you on the whole Corner Gas/Little Mosque debate, angrycrustacean... Little Mosque started out as kind of funny in a "I don't know if I should be laughing at this" kind of way, but I'd say all the shine is gone now. Corner Gas has better writing, a better cast, and isn't dependent on 'shocking' people into watching.

As for Rick Mercer, well... you can't trust a man that can talk the PM into stupid bits that consist of him pretending to read a bedtime story to Mercer (not to mention, skinny dipping with Bob Ray.... *shudder!*)... I'd say the funniest he ever was, was with 22 Minutes, although I think Mary Walsh kind of owned that show. It's been so long since I watched it, I can't remember - was it Walsh that used to dress up like Xena and bombard the politicians on Parliament Hill? hmm.gif Now THAT was funny!

I WAS really impressed with The Hour - for a couple of months. Then it started to look like a cleverly (or not-so-cleverly, depending on which side of the debate you're on) disguised platform for various government types to air their greivances or 'achievements'. That Belinda Stronach interview almost made me throw something at the tv... no.gif Of course, in my opinion, the CBC has almost never done anything good, with the obvious exception of Hockey Night... wink2.gif

spot on angry!!!!
i think you're absolutley right about that mosque thing, and it keeps getting plugged on the hour, but it's not funny and quite the rip off of corner gas, which i agree, is finally a funny canadian sitcom.
not going to criticize you for such a good point, only a cbc employee would do that.

gotta agree with you too, liokee. walsh was the original invader of parliament hill and broke the rules, and now mercer has made it tired.

i still like the hour because of the people he gets in for interviews. i have NEVER been a fan of OASIS, but when george interviewed noel gallagher i laughed my ass off, also his interviews with bob geldof, pretty heady stuff.

unfortunately mercer is the darling of the cbc and will be there for a long time, the cbc never seems to respect it viewing audience, because they don't have to rely solely on advertisement revenues, they just keep recycling the same old crap, like "air farce" or "front page challenge" my god how long did that piece of crap go on for.

I still love Rick Mercer. I haven't watched 22 minutes in ages because that got old fast for me. I find Mercer to be quite charming and funny, and it's great to have someone like him to be a commentator on Canadian politics. I find we have too few and too many of them are focusing on American politics.

I do catch the Rick Mercer Report when I can. original.gif
