This is something i have always wondered if a adult male mammoth and an adult male mastodon were 2 meet and fight who do you think would in the battle an why?

Even though mastodons were smaller, they had fairly straight tusks, which would allow for stabbing, to a degree. A mammoth however would have had curved tusks, so it would be limited to more or less whacking around with them. So I'd bet on the mastodon.

I was just gonna say that. But mastodons here in Jersey were little guys. If they fight like horses by rearing up a mammoth would stomp a mastodon.

They were roughly the same size, with a slight mammoth advantage and their tusks were about the same length at about 5 meters.

The differances are in the shape of the tusks and the muscularity of their respective body types. The mammoths advantage was in being bulkier and somehwat more muscular, but this advantage was probably negated by the curvature of their tusks.

The Mastodon although not as strong, had nearly horizontal tusks.

Whats this all mean? No idea but since elephants and their ancestors are my favorite animals, I ll say 50/50 so as to not show favoritism one way or the the other. ph34r.gif

Hmmm good question, But i guess no matter what we think we'll never really know the answer to this......

I agree. I've been seriously thinking about this for quite some time this evening. laugh.gif I would bet on the mastodon as well, due to the straight tusks.

I do have to disagree. I think that the Wooly Mammoth could kill the Mastodon. Wooly's tusks could impale masty's quite easily.

i agree, the mammoth would impale the little mastadonth, by makin an upward head motion.

in reality the two would rarely see the need to fight not for food or mates or anything of that degree but if they were to fight size matters in the animal world and a mammoth would over power the mastodon remember elephant males today rarely fight to the death its usualy a stregenth match with the weaker retreating

^what he said. Why must we have them fight? Mastodons and mammoths are both equally wholesome in my eyes, so I'd much rather they be buddies and go out for drinks, maybe some karaoke. So that's the real question, which would do a better version of "Funky Cold Medina." the mammoth or the mastodon?

This may be a bit off topic but I was slightly dissapointed:

Size
It is a common misconception that mammoths were much larger than modern elephants, an error that has led to "mammoth" being used as an adjective meaning "very big". Certainly, the largest known species, the Imperial Mammoth of California, reached heights of at least 4 meters (13 feet) at the shoulder. Mammoths would probably weigh in the region of 6-8 tons. [1]. However, most species of mammoth were only about as large as a modern Asian Elephant, and fossils of a species of dwarf mammoth have been found on the Californian channel islands (Mammuthus exilis) as well as the Mediterranean island of Sardinia (Mammuthus lamarmorae).

I'd still bet on ol'mammoth though. Although all my mammoth fantasies are now shattered.
