Hihihi. =)

Randomly, I was interested if someone could help me. I'm freakin' scared stiff of silence. I have no idea why. Ever since I can remember, I just can't stand to be silent, be it by myself or in a crowd. Give me spiders, needles, shape shifting ghosts, anything and I'm fine. But I'm so deeply scared of it. I sleep with the fan on (even in winter) just because it makes a noise and I'll be honest, it's starting to make me freezing cold (curse end of winter British temperatures).

Anyone know if it's a sign of something ??? Not specifically spiritual, but mental as well. I don't mind either way (well, obviously I do... but ya know), I'd really like to get it sorted. Any suggestions ?

It's funny because I just posted a similar comment on a different topic no more than a couple of minutes ago. It depends on what kind of silence. The one I have, I think I can hear my soul frequencies being distorted and shaped rapidly. It's like a constant tone that keeps me awake. To me, silence is louder than a cafeteria. It is so annoying, until you stay there and listen to it, then it gets weird.

I only thought of it because my TV just randomly went off, and with my boyfriend in the bath everything went extremely quiet, and I found myself running to switch something, anything on! Type of silence? No idea. Sitting in silence just feels really, really heavy, and oppressive, it makes me feel incredibly emotional. Makes me ears seem like they've got 10 tonne weights attached to them. I'm not sure I actually hear anything. I can hear a mild fuzziness, but to be honest, every time it is complete silence, I'm normally too busy running to turn something on. =)

But thing is, it's not like an awkwardness. It's actual fear. Really hard to explain =(

Lots of people need a tv or radio on in the backround.I think its a fear of being alone, the backround noise is like having company.
Nephthys
Could be. But I know my boyfriend's here. He's just in the other room. Even if we sit together in silence, it's still like it's screaming at me. Not like a socially akward silence either, we had plenty of those in the early days. It feels quite different, I just don't know how to explain it o_O
sheleven
I wouldnt worry about it.Im sure its normal because our lives are usually so loud and hectic so its strange to sit in silence.Im all alone in my house tonight so im listening to the radio right now. grin2.gif

I've found that when things are silent, other sounds come to take their place. The faint sound of your own breathing. The wind across the windowpanes. Night insects, in the summer. Oftentimes a low humming that seems to come from in the earth.
Nephthys
Suppose you're right. Just annoying that it's become such a fear of mine, I'm not too sure why I'm so scared of it.

You're lucky you have the radio, I have my boyfriend's tone-deaf singing. o_O

Its called fear of the unknown.

Meaning that when all is silent, you dont know whats going on because your not used to it. Your mind still thinks that you should be hearing things, but you aren't, and thats whats probobly giving you the creeps.

Just my shot in the dark. I dont think anything paranormals going on here.
Nephthys
I didn't expect it to be paranormal to be honest, assuming it was more something to do with ye olde ticker upstairs, just unsure what! Thanks for the help chaps / chapesses.

sounds to me like a phobia. these can be cured with the use of therapy and sometimes hypnotherapy. i have one myself, though it is not of silence.

sedatephobia - fear/phobia of silence

It could be fear of silence, or maybe an issue you need to work on within yourself and sound keeps you distracted from deeper thoughts that might bring the issue(s) to mind. I use music as a distraction when I'm not ready to deal with something. Don't think just listen original.gif
Try silence for an hour, it won't kill you and maybe you'll see what the root is, then if you aren't ready to deal with it, turn the tv or stereo on. At least you will know why you fear silence. Might take a few tries but, I'd bet you can do it.

my stereo is never off - cause i hear way too much when all is silent -
there is lots to hear - and i follow it further and further.......
- music over rides that -

I too absolutely hate silence. It makes me bored, lonely, and depressed. crying.gif

Wouldn't say I'm afraid of it though. What are you afraid will happen when it's quiet? Have you tried sitting in silence and trying to analyze where your fear is directed? Have you always been afraid like this?

oo i get that, i dunno if it soul frequency or sumthing but it drives me crazy, i hate it so much sometimes it gets so loud i can hear it over the T.V. and wen i tell people they give me the crazy look, although it does have its uses when i try and meditate (i'm not too good) it gives me something to focus on. happy.gif

Ever since I can remember, certainly. I've never liked sitting in silence, but as of late, it's becoming a real fear. crying.gif and it sucks. I don't know what will happen. It's been suggested above it could be a fear of lonliness, but I'm around my partner 24/7 almost, and he's always close by. I will certainly try and sit in silence for a while. Not sure what it'll do to me ! But I'll give it a go happy.gif.

Instead of running a fan, you could play music, and put on headphones. A sign of something, i doubt it. It probably means that you have anxioty, but dont take my word on it. I would go to a doctor of i were you.

There is never silence, your heart still thumps, you still breathe. Seems to me that you fear being alone with your own thoughts so you need a distraction, some kind of noise to take your mind off your mind. As Depeche Mode said, "Enjoy the Silence" wink2.gif

Things are never really silent are they ? Even in a soundproofed room with nothing to make noise there are always sounds. The sound of your breathing, the sound of your heartbeat, the sounds you make while moving even a little. When there are no outside distractions one tends to examine oneself. This might be somewhat frightening the first few times but you might acquire a taste for it. It should help you focus on whatever subject you would care to think about. You might see things in a new light. Then again you might not. If not, it is an easy thing to fix original.gif

I agree with the above 100%. It could very well be an issue you have with something that you are subconsciously refusing to deal with or maybe you are frightened that by being still and silent you may suddenly discover things you don't really want to know about.

Personally I like silence, it gives me time to get my thoughts together and figure what to do next lol. However, I do know someone who refuses to be still at all, they are either on the computer, reading or talking! The only time they are silent is when they are asleep!

One last piece of advice, don't ever go on holiday to the Sahara Desert if you hate silence. Apparently my friend went on a camel ride into the desert and she said that the silence was SO much that it actually hurt her ears!
RabidCat
Many times people use noise to fixate their attention on the present world. American Indians used silence to silence the mind and see the world in a different way (an unknown way, to us). A silent world can be a frightening world, as you begin to see and hear things normally unseen and unheard.
