Full Version: Question for Pagans

Let me start off by saying that I know next to nothing about pagan beliefs.

Now, with that said, I have come across something that I find intriguing. It's referred to as the Left Hand Path Paganism. I have done several Internet searches and have come up with a multitude of conflicting and confusing results. Some sites have described this as a sort of dark side to pagan beliefs, while other have described it as a form of introspection and personal soul searching. Then, there are sites that have simply describe it as Satanism.

What I want to know is is LHP an integral part of pagan belief? Is it considered something akin to evil, or is it something that can be used/practiced without it being considered negative?

I would appreciate any info/opinions on LHP.

LHP, some people refer to it as the dark path. You will never know light unless you can see the dark. We all walk the knife edge of both paths. We need our darkness survive. It is the part of us that hunts, and kills. Life feeds on life whether it is chicken or a plant, it is life and we must eat to live. It is also where we defend or run in fear to save ourselves. It is our instinct to live.

The light side is the of us where we find love, empathy, peace, courage. It is the best part of us, the part that saves the life a child who is not our own. The part that loves unconditionally and gives.

If you want to just walk one Path or the other I think you would find life difficult. Life is about balance.

Well said!

I agree! I think it's most likely those who believe in the harm none rule or the wiccan rede(whatever you do comes back to you) that fear the left hand path. I know many traditional witches (who may or may not consider themselves pagan, just for clarity) do not really specify it as the left handed path and just consider the way as a whole, one path with many choices.

I almost forgot... Those wanting to sound mysterious and evil might call it that just for a reaction. ph34r.gif

Excellent explanation. That's exactly how I've always felt about life and the relationships between all things. I never realized that it was referred to as the dark path and light path. Thank you

for me understanding the lower levels, that of the mother in life i tern to the left hand ,

and when understanding the higher levels ,that of my father in life i turn to the right hand.

when i put my hand out and it is on the right you feel from within .

and when i put my hand out and it is on the left were standing face to face and you feel from without.

soon to come is when the two will be one and shine from within and without.

Left hand path is basically an applied belief system and magickal philosophy where the practicioner is the godforce. That the powers they believe in comes from them, and not from some higher source. Lefthand practicioners tend to be more physcial and human nature oriented, LHP being something you see in LeVay Satanism or any magick based system that sees man as the being who can transcend and be more then himself/herself.

Just wanted to point out that Satan is a figure in the Abrahamic symbolic cosmos. Most pagans (like me) don't believe in Satan.

I think that the church defines neopaganism as "evil". "Evil" is incarnated in their character "Satan". Therefore, we must worship Satan.

Of course there are Anti-Christians who really DO worship Satan. But for the most part, "Satan" references come out of a teenage goth mindset, or out of paranoid Christianity.

*checks her God list*

Hmm.. Bast, Dionysis, Goddess, The Dagda, and still currently seeking a shamanic god/dess for healing.

Nope.. no Satan in site. For if I were to be a worshiper of satan (and not a satanist mind you.. different thing all together) I would be a christian. Which I'm not. X)
Darkwind
If it wasn't for Christianity there would be no Satanism, since it is they who acknowledge him in the first place. So Crimson is right the left hand path would be those seated at the left hand of God, in Christian tradition those on the left would be those unfavored, the right hand would be those favored by God.

I guess Satan would be seated at the left. Christ would be seated at the right.

So the LHP would be Satanism. I don't know that much about it. I prefer my ancient Gods and Goddesses.
