I wanted to discuss the Soul

if you believe in a soul are you automatically believe in a "Faith?

my friend and i have been racking our brains about this, he says im not Agnostic if i believe in a soul

i believe in god but i dont believe in the Christian philosophy does this mean im contradicting my self ?
RougeRat
Agnostic is believing the possibility that something can exist, so I would say that your friend it wrong. The soul or something like a soul exists outside of christian philosophy as well. I would say that you have to have faith that their is a soul, but faith does not have to do with God at all if that is not your belief.

Not believe in a faith but you definately have faith (pending on how much you believe that you have a soul). God has no religion. Just create your own religion from your own experience and insights. If certain points in christianity, Hinduism, atheism or whatever other doctrines out there make sense to you intuitively or logically then take those points and be grateful to have learned them.

Just because you may like some parts of one religion but reject the rest doesnt mean that the parts that you liked are not going to make sense or that you shouldnt assimilate them into your own personal belief system. Just because one may say he is a christian doesnt mean that he cant learn anything from hinduism to help propel his spirituality. Same goes if you are hindu, doesnt mean you cant learn anything from the teachings of christ to help you on your way.

The way I see it is that if you cant learn at least one good thing to help you for your quest for knowledge from every religion you come across then you arnt open minded. I hope that didnt come across too dogmatic.

Ya the notion of a soul was in many philosophies before the creation of christianity. Like the teachings of Plato for an example. Hinduism is another example (oldest higher religion on record). There are literally countless others but it doesnt seem necessary to name them all.
ND-DAVE
The soul in a simple description is man defenition to what he is aside from flesh and bone. It gives clairity to the question of an afterlife. If Your body doesnt go as it is obvious, then something has to. So the only faith that is really connected to the soul is the faith that there is an afterlife. Doesnt matter which which faith just one that has to do with an afterlife which is basicly all of them. Bottom line is that there has to be more to life than what goes on in the short time we're on earth. If not what is the point of living if it is for nothing?

Agnostic means you don't believe in God. You say you do, so you're obviously not agnostic. I don't know what I believe, whether it's God or a higher being or mother freakin' nature itself. It doesn't matter if you're contradicting yourself. What matters is your own inner peace. You have to live with that forever. So regardless what any one else thinks, be at peace with what you believe and who you are. That is all that matters.

Not necessarily. You believe in the possibility of a God, whether you are leaning more towards him being real or fake is up the individual. Maybe you are thinking of Atheist. wink2.gif

Still I agree with the fact that it doesn't matter as long as you are happy withyourself and what you believe.

God, higher power or mother nature are three different names for the same thing in my view. Good post though thumbsup.gif

No agnosticism is when you believe that God is possible but at the same time believe that there will never be proof of its existence. A person who follows God but no certain orthodox religion is just spiritual (or religious with one's own notions of God if you wanna use the word 'religious' ultimately both are the same however the word religion and religious have more bad connotations).

I always took it that having a faith was having some sort of religion but having faith was belief in God. I also believe that to have faith and believe in God also includes believing in the Soul.

I have no idea about Gnostics or Agnostics, I keep meaning to have a look in the dictionary but I am too lazy to prise it out of the bookcase which is packed so full of books, I am going to have to go to a bootsale LOL.

You already are a soul whether you have a particular faith or not, or whether you believe in God or not. The essential part of you is spirit which can never die. It is your own consciousness. You can develop it through meditation and realizing that you are a lot more than you think you are. No one can grasp who God is - he is the sum of all consciousness and infinitely more, so he is far beyond anything we can comprehend. Realize you are a spirit and ask for guidance from your spirtual guides and guardian angel. You are not alone. We are all on the same path.

I thought an agnostic was somebody who wasn't sure if there was a god. How do you define agnostic? It sounds like you just don't believe in Christianity. A lot of people don't believe the Christian philosophy yet they still believe in God. I don't think it is a contradiction. You are making it sound like Christianity and Atheism are the only choices. You don't have to be a Christian to believe in God and the soul.
