Police shocked by video of pot-smoking toddlers
Tue Mar 6, 2007 12:06PM EST By Ed Stoddard

DALLAS (Reuters) - Texas police said on Monday they were shocked by the video recording of a pair of toddlers aged two and five being encouraged to smoke marijuana by their uncle and a friend of his.

Police discovered the video last month as they searched a house in the Texas town of Watauga for stolen goods. Local television station aired the video during the weekend.

"Our investigators are shocked. Many if not all of them are parents themselves and they cannot believe that someone would do this to a child," said Bruce Ure, the director of Watauga's department of public safety.

In the recording shown on the local Fox news channel, two young adult males can clearly be seen lighting marijuana cigarettes and encouraging the two baby brothers to puff on them. The faces of the children are blacked out.

I heard about this on FNC. >.< What where the guys thinking? I hope they get a bad enough punishment for it.

But I wonder if the Mother had anything to do with it. They mentioned her but she was asleep. And where did the guys get the pot?

Most likely, these teens wouldn't have done this if they felt she would be upset about it when she found out. Either they felt like it was not such a huge boundary to cross, or that was really good weed and they just completely lost their senses and did something thinking they wouldn't be found out. My guess is the mom's probably on dope, too. She has to be aware of the situation going on, they wouldn't smoke weed in the house with her sleeping there if she did not give some kind of ok, whether condoning it explicitly or just passively not stopping it. I mean they're cozy enough to smoke it while she's sleeping, and she was cozy enough to let them watch her kids = it's highly (haha I made a pun) unlikely that this caught her completely unawares. They may not have gone this far before, but they have been travelling down this slippery slope for a minute with no one in the house putting up any resistance.
How many of us want to bet that the room SHE was sleeping in was littered with empty Fritos bags and Blue Bell ice cream containers? Conjecture on my part of course, but it's what I think.

They should really be put away for this, it is disgusting. Either that or stick them on an island in isolation and let them smoke themselves to death.

Just how irresponsible can anyone get!!!

I saw this on ACA. A couple of teens smoke weed and give it to toddlers and now the kids are taken by welfare. Excellent, so when they get jumped from house to house for the rest of their childhood at least now they'll have a video explaining why. Just because the mother was asleep doesn't mean she smoked it herself. And say she did, she didn't personally give it to her children. Her babysitters did and now she's going to lose her kids because of it.

What kind of f*ing idiot would make a video of that in the first place?

No, I actually agree with texasgirlheather on this one. The mother had some sort of involvement in it whether she was sleeping or not.
The teens wouldn't have lit up a joint and started smoking it right in the house unless A. The mother did that herself. Or B. She let the teens do it on a regular basis.
No one is that dumb to smoke pot in the house with an adult who wouldn't condone it. The adult would obviously smell it long after they put it out.
It is also the mother's responsibility to make sure that she has a responsible babysitter for her children.
I am a mother myself and I hate to say it, but, I don't feel any sympathy for this lady.

I think that they should get the full ten years maximum, getting children to take drugs is completly rotten. I dont think its fair to presume that the mother was involved as we don`t know for sure, they were old tennagers its not hard to score puff and doing the dodgy behind the mothers back is easy enough.

Exactly. People lose their children over not providing them with adequate, responsible child care frequently. That's one of the top parenting responsibilities there.

Curious, would those who want the kids to be taken away feel the same way if the kids were being encouraged to take a sip of beer?

Not saying I defend these guys, I think either situation is pretty deplorable.

Yes it is just aweful!!!

What is interesting is the cognitive disonance which causes peoples failure to recogise the actuality of their decisions.

I remember an interesting conversation with a sociologist friend of mine who described an often used anecdote for this of a soldier in a helicopter watching the war below him. He finds it harder to shoot people than he would down on the ground because the view from above is far more detatched from the situation.

I have recent experiences myself of this, except less serious than the encouragement of a toddler to smoke pot. It seems that when living in a community of drug users, they are unable to percieve themselves as pushers when offering drugs to others, because to them using drugs is ok, and the common stereotype for a "drugpusher" is that they have evil intent. Many drug users do not have evil intent and because of their inability to associate themselves with "being evil" they dissassociate themselves from the actuality that they may be coercing someone into doing something via peer pressure. Primarily this story is sad and tragic, but the related psychological process is interesting also.
