After years of intensive research, Chaco Canyon, located in a desolate region of northwestern New Mexico, leaves us with more questions than answers.Huge pueblos, known as "Great Houses" are the distinguishing feature of a culture that flourished in this area starting around 850 AD and continued until 1250 AD. Ten massive structures, some four stories high, had approximately 3,000 rooms. Pueblo Bonito was the size of the Roman Coliseum. Generations of The Ancient Ones, known also as Anasazi, dedicated themselves to the building of these pueblos. Not only did it require the transportation of sandstone from the cliffs above, timber required for the construction of the four story buildings was not available in the area.Modern research has proven that the trees were carried by workers over 50 miles. Few crops could be grown in this arid region, so food to support the thousands of builders had to be imported. A unique feature in the construction of many of the pueblos is that they were aligned not only with the movements of the sun, but also the 18 1/2 year lunar cycle. No other civilization is known to have accomplished this.
Some 200 miles of straight roads 24- to 36-feet wide were built with raised beds, bridges, stairways and ramps. For the most part, these roads led to nowhere. For many years the theory prevailed that the "Chaco Phenomenon" existed as the distribution center for a large trading network. Colorful parrot feathers, copper bells and seashells from up to 3,000 miles away have been found in the ruins.

Cool post! Here's some more info on Chaco canyon regarding abandoning the pueblos.
Abandoning the pueblos
From the twelfth to the thirteenth centuries, many of the pueblos in Chaco Canyon were abandoned. What caused people to leave the pueblos, the centers of Anasazi society? One pueblo at Sand Canyon can provide clues. Archaeologists found evidence that when Sand Canyon was finally abandoned in the thirteenth century, the kivas were burned. Kivas were sacred ceremonial places; they would not have been systematically burned without cause. Many archaeologists believe the kivas were ceremonially burned, possibly as a way to "close" the kivas when people left. The Anasazi very likely did this because they never intended to return. Another important clue is that, at Sand Canyon, people left almost all their possessions rather than taking them. The Anasazi likely had a long and difficult journey ahead of them.
Why would the Anasazi leave potentially for good pueblos it had taken them decades to construct? Scientists have found one possible answer by looking at tree rings (a study called dendrochronology) in the Sand Canyon area. In the period between A.D. 1125 and 1180, very little rain fell in the region. After 1180, rainfall briefly returned to normal. From 1270 to 1274 there was another long drought, followed by another period of normal rainfall. In 1275, yet another drought began. This one lasted 14 years.
When this cycle of drought began, Anasazi civilization was at its height. Communities were densely populated. Even with good rains, the Anasazi were using their land to its limits. Without rain, it was impossible to grow enough food to support the population. Widespread famine occurred. People left the area in large numbers to join other pueblo peoples to the south and east, abandoning the Chaco Canyon pueblos and, later, the smaller communities that surrounded them. Anasazi civilization began a long period of migration and decline after these years of drought and famine. By the 1300s, it had all but died out in Chaco Canyon.
Was drought alone the only factor in the mass abandonment of the pueblos? Some archaeologists now believe that other factors religious upheaval, internal political conflict, or even warfare may have combined to exacerbate the effects of the drought. Whatever the root causes of the famine were, the archaeological evidence clearly shows it was devastating to the Anasazi.

Very interesting as well freya. These are all very good theories as to why "the Ancient Ones" would abandon these fantastic pueblos that took them many years to create.
Questions, questions, and more questions!.
I find it very fascinating that the Anasazi happen to be the only known civilization to construct structures that accurately align with the movements of the sun and the 18 1/2 year lunar cycle.

Okay for all ancient cultures that built megalithic structures in line with the stars, or a calendar, as some theories suggest... Because you hear about that a lot...
Why would they do that? Why build structures inline with all that? It just seems like a lot of work. Were they keeping track of astronomical movements because they were so intune with the stars?
Why?
Where they trying to manifest the heavens on earth?

All great questions!
Why did all the various cultures around the world construct pyramids, pueblos, megalithic stone structures, etc? If cultures supposedly never had any contact with each other back then, why are there structures such as these on every continent? Why is this a common denominator (among others)?
Whats the astronomical link?
Is there a possibility that there was advanced technology we are not aware of or have not discovered (or hidden by various governments & museums)? Possibly spiritual cultures living amongst advanced civilizations? Now I'm gettin crazy, eh?
