Full Version: DNR Asked to Act Fast to Control Gray Wolves

Next week state wildlife managers will have the authority to trap and destroy problem wolves.

One of their areas of focus will be around Suring in Oconto County. People living there say the Department of Natural Resources should act fast once the gray wolf is removed from the endangered species list.

Dale Fabry is worried about his pups. So much so, he won't let them be outside without him.

"I had a wolf right by the house here," Fabry recalls, "and the dogs knew it, too, because they bee-lined right in the house. And I don't know if they're after the deer or my pups because they know it's an easy prey maybe."

Fabry says wolf sightings are becoming a common occurrence around Suring. Three months ago wolves nearly killed this horse, and there's fear animals aren't the only ones in danger.

"One of these days a little boy or little girl is going to be missing. Playing in the sandbox, something is going to happen. Something has got to be done," he said.

"It's great they're bringing them back, but I think they should be controlled," Fabry added.

Others like coyote hunter Tony Gomber of Gillett aren't so sympathetic. "The DNR shouldn't have never planted them. They're wrecking people's animals and stuff. They should all be shot."

Gomber feels it's just a matter of time before wolves go after his cattle. "If they ever come by my animals, I'll shoot 'em."

Beginning Monday, landowners will be able to shoot wolves attacking their animals, but just living around them, many say, is eerie.

"Sometimes it's a long walk from the house to the garage when we're leaving for work. It's scary," Fabry said.

I just can't believe how idiotic people around here are about wolves. I've seen them before when hiking and they've never bothered me. I strongly disagree with unlisting them as well. Once they are idiots like that Tony Gomber guy are going to shoot them for fun because they're sadistic jerks. disgust.gif

*sighs and shakes her head* And right back down into the endangerd list they will go...

All they have to is put something that smells really bad around the cows. I think I saw that on tv. Or get something to guard them. I would like living near wolves.

Stupid humans...

These people that wish to shoot wolves should be shot themselves, because they're just showing how ignorant they really are about this species.

I too would prefer that they keep the wolves on the endangered species list...just for the simple fact that idiot humans will attempt to find some sort of reason to harm them.

Maybe we should hunt these annoying people!

BTW, just to let you know...wolves have killed people, but not in N. America.

Yes.. Wolves have killed humans... humans stupid enough not to take precautions and left themselves vulnerable to an attack.

We're not superior... we are basicaly prey still to preditors.

Not necessarily. They have been known to come into the homes of villagers in India, and drag the children out.

I want to remind you thought that I am against hunting these rare animals.

Urban spraw and reintroduction do not go together. More people are moving to the country to escape but can't handle the wildlife. Another aspect of reintroduction is they tend to do it in private areas. So as to protect the tourists and campers. When they reintroduced bears to the Pine Barrens, they dropped them on Ocean Spray co-op properties. God forbid they might F@$% with the campers and canoers. They did the same with wolves in Nebraska. Dropped them by my mothers ranch where they can munch on her goats and horses. Don't want them in the WMA where they would interfere with hunters and campers.
10 years ago they were dropping timber rattlers all over in private areas. Then they built one of those yuppie escape developments on top of a large clutch of them. Stoopid!
A ranger named Vicky told me they dumped 5 rattlers by me. I had wondered where they came from. I told her 2 were in my freezers ( they were) and asked if she wanted to come for dinner.

They shouldn't mess with the wolves though. He should move his cows..........

I've never cared much for wolves. They can be very vicious. I say keep their population under control. I used to have to shoot coyotes that came into the backyard, so I understand how wild canines can act. Sure in a pefect world humans and wolves wouldn't encroach on each others territory, but that is not reality.

Ah right so because you don't care means we should continue to damage the worlds already undermined predator populations. Then we complain that there prey are destroying forest and fields. Well done.

Going along with that reasoning, maybe we should shoot people too?

Humans are more vicious then any other animal out there.
