That was really weird.
A few nights ago, I don't exactly remember when, I was dreaming of something normal.
I mean, it wasn't great or scary, just...normal and boring. tongue.gif

So, everything was fine, until something really random happened.
I was looking at a sheet of paper with text on it, and my mom came and said "You see the G in that word?"
That's when I woke up, with the same feeling you have after a nightmare.
My heart was beating fast and everything, the common "panic" feeling.

I honestly don't know what caused this reaction, it's not like the letter G is scary. laugh.gif
And, I'm not scared of my mom, lol.
Also, I don't remember anything wrong with her, that could have disturbed me (cuts in her face or whatever).

So, is it possible that your body reacts like if you had a nightmare, but you actually did not?
Or there was something really scary that maybe I don't remember after the letter thing?
Maybe something that my mind "erased" from my memory because it was too scary.
Like, many victims, after an accident don't remember seeing blood or "disgusting and troubling" stuff.

i've had those before but they are no where near as bad as waking from sleep to the excrutiating pain of a calf muscle spasm in the middle of the night crying.gif
Ashiene
maybe at that moment u had a pillow over ur face and u were suffocating, or maybe u were choking while u snored, that's probably why u woke up feeling 'panicked'.
Ashiene
there could also be a sublimal image in your mind (this week's front page article) which u were unaware of seeing but your mind sees it. this couldve triggered that feeling u described while looking at the letter G.
Almighty89
Maybe it was something like...
"You see the G in that word?
G...as in Gore"
Then maybe I saw a gory scene, that I forgot or, like I said, my mind just "erased" that part from my memory, because it was too disgusting or something.
The mind can be crazy sometimes, and dreams can be really unpredictable. wacko.gif

There is still so much unsolved about what goes on between the brain and the body during sleep...it could be alot of things. You may be right about having 'erased' the scariest part of the dream, because its true that dreams are normally wiped out of short term memory before they even make it to long term memory. Who knows?

It also could have been an accidental release of 'fight or flight' endorphins...the same chemicals in your brain that are released when you are scared in real life, or startled. Some people that are diagnosed with panic attacks suffer from the untimely release of these chemicals, causing to have the terrified, panicked feeling at a completely unnecessary time (which in itself can be terrifying, but i am getting off track.)

The other suggestions about choking while you were snoring are very valid also. Maybe you even have a case of sleep apnea, where you stop breathing in your sleep, and you woke yourself up by gasping for air, causing the quickened heartbeat.

I know you weren't posting this to suggest that it was something paranormal (but with dreams its so easy cause we jsut don't know) but I dont think it was anything serious, and that all of us have had something like that happen to us, whether we remember it or not. But, I would say that if it begins to happen alot, I would see a doctor to rule out something medical.

You're right, I don't believe it was something paranormal at all.
I just like to know more about the mind and dreams.

Thanks for the info by the way. thumbsup.gif

I might be way off. But i have the theory that the brain sometimes makes you dream several things at once, like it's brainstorming on writing a film-script or something. Takes loads of different ideas at once.

Perhaps if this theory is correct, your brain was thinking about two things at once. Allowing you to see only one, but the other dream (The one you didn't see) might've scared your brain?

Might be a long shot really, but i'm typical for doing that tongue.gif

I had a strange dream, too. Both my sister and I got breast implants. I remember thinking, "Boy, I'm going to have fun with these." Hm.

I agree with the suggestions that the sudden fear you experienced may be the result of a sleep disorder, so be sure to check out the medical possibilities if this continues to happen. I have sleep apnea, and before I was diagnosed, I would have dreams where I was being smothered, or I was drowning, and then I would wake up with a jolt of panic.

I personally think most dreams are just brain farts that happen in your sleep (I don’t really need breast implants). Then, there are those dreams that really stick with you--they make an impression that is hard to shake. I think those dreams do have a purpose. Either your mind has been working unconsciously to solve a problem, and it figures it out and gives you the solution in your dream; or, maybe a loved one that has passed on uses the dream to send a message. Those dreams are very rare, but I think they happen. I have had a couple myself. One was about a family friend who had died of cancer but had been estranged from my sister when he died. He came to me in a dream to give her a message (she was having a hard time dealing with the issues they had in the past, and she had never mourned his passing because her of anger). I didn’t realize the message was for her until I told her about the dream several months later—I remember saying, “I have no idea why I had this dream—it makes no sense to me.” Then, from her reaction (she started to cry), I realized the dream actually had been a message for her. It made a big difference in how she handled her unresolved issues with the deceased.

Oh I hate when that happens laugh.gif

To the OP

Actually when dreaming the mind has great difficulty comprehending letters and numbers. If you have ever tried reading or doing simple math in a dream you will most likely discover you can't and it can become very frustrating. Maybe when your mom asked if you could see the G on the paper your mind couln't see the "G" and you became frustrated mayby angry that you could see the G. Just a thought.

I agree with you Black Death about the possibility of your brain blocking out (or just not remembering) part of the dream. My worst dream ever was actually pretty inocuous, but I woke up practically screaming with that all over body terror response thing.

My dream was just a couple of friends and I stepping off a path in the woods to keep out of sight when a nun pushing a wheelbarrow full of rocks walked by. That was the whole dream... that I remember. Absolute terror though. Weird.

I don't know why, but that made me laugh! Nuns with wheelbarrows full of rocks IS pretty creepy... wink2.gif

I would agree with The Silver Thong. Reading letters or numbers in dreams usually is difficult, they tend to change. Seeing and trying to read words, and realizing there is something wrong with them, can help you realise that you are dreaming. You can use it to induce lucid dreaming... But sometimes discovering that reality around you is not real can be scary, and your mind does not want you to control the dream, you just can't accept that you are in a dream and you wake up in panic.
This is only my opinion...

BlackDeath, do you have OCD? It may be that you were expecting, when you went to look at the G after your mum told you, something bad to happen which then jolted you out of your dream (a symptom of OCD).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obsessive-compulsive_disorder If you experience any of those symptoms then that may be why. Even subconsciously you might have just expected something to have 'changed' on the text which would have scared you. Sorry if this doesn't make sense to you, I think that I have OCD (although I haven't been diagnosed by a doctor), and I occasionally have dreams kindof like the one you described where nothing is scary and then I wake up scared as hell. I remember vividly one dream where I was in school in my class room and everyone just turned around and started staring at something behind me, with completely blank expressions. I suddenly got this incredible feeling of dread and just willed myself to wake up, like there was something behind me and if I looked at it it would trigger a nightmare. Just my 2c.

Maybe it's the beginning of a word or name

Perhaps you should watchout for Gary, Grapes and Green or something.

Whatever it is, you won't forget it, so I don't think you need worry lol
