I agree, Dune is not even a historical novel as it occurs on another planet. But in many ancient human legend theres are many gigantic serpents and dragons, sometimes even called "wyrms". The Zorastrian religion talks about an enormous dragon that will devour one third of the human race during the apocolypse, and John inclusdes this story in the Book of Revelation, only changes the one huge dragon into 200 million fire breathing "dragon horses" with sharp teeth and a snaky tail.
In 1000 AD many Christians thought this would be the apocolypse and God would release the Leviathan serpent to devour all the sinners in the world. When it didn't happen, they made the Pope at the time a Saint for convincing God (or Gabriel) not to release the monster yet.
