So...I was sitting here thinking about movies when all of a sudden Dune came to my head so what is your belief on the worms?

Wonder's what this has to do with history......It's just a movie i don't think we have to worry....

I agree, Dune is not even a historical novel as it occurs on another planet. But in many ancient human legend theres are many gigantic serpents and dragons, sometimes even called "wyrms". The Zorastrian religion talks about an enormous dragon that will devour one third of the human race during the apocolypse, and John inclusdes this story in the Book of Revelation, only changes the one huge dragon into 200 million fire breathing "dragon horses" with sharp teeth and a snaky tail.

In 1000 AD many Christians thought this would be the apocolypse and God would release the Leviathan serpent to devour all the sinners in the world. When it didn't happen, they made the Pope at the time a Saint for convincing God (or Gabriel) not to release the monster yet.

Perhaps the author of Dune drew on the earthly myths of dragons, serpents and the like. But the worms in Dune while they can be dangerous also can be ridden and, though the good of spice (drug) is questionable it does provide some benefits to a small sector (pilots). Maybe a parallel to certain illicit drugs in our society.

What really bothered me in Dune was the physical differences in the pilots who lived on spice, supposedly they were born as humanoid as anyone else but, by expanding thier minds enough to fold space, thier bodies became severely deformed.
