Full Version: Religion... A crutch?

Okay, I've heard a number of times where religion is branded as a crutch, and those on the other side argue that it's truly from God, so it must be necessary, etc, etc, as well as that some of the earliest scientists were religious, that science wouldn't be here if it weren't for religion, etc, etc. Well, what if they were both right? I think I'm the first person to entertained the idea of religion being a crutch because God has made it so. In the bible for instance, there's a lame man who had to go around on crutches until Jesus healed him, and he doesn't need them anymore. What if religions are right about the existence of a God, but religions themselves were a crutch we were supposed to let go of at some point? I remind you, this is all hypothetical. What do you think?

How do you let go of religion? To me religion is an attempt to explain the unknown and a philosophy to live by. People will always have theories to explain the unknown. People will always have philosophies to live by. So the way I see it we will always have religion.

maybe...

Whether or not God exists as a seperate entity, religion is a base for the moral social constructs by which we live today or in other words a crutch, yes.

If God is a seperate entity...then i am.

A common human characteristic is the need to understand the things that happen around us. When you think about the times in which the concept of Gods came into being, there was so much that people did not understand about science and the forces of nature. Until they had the resource to find systematic answers the easiest way to explain and understand the things that took place were to attribute them to a representative model like a God figure in the same way with which we attribute things to scientific models which represent answers today.

The Bible was possibly invented by man as a means of bringing control and order to society through the manipulation of peoples fears of the unknown for his advantage.....this of course depends on your belief. thumbsup.gif

MMM interesting!!!
Do all things that are unknown require an answer?

On the one hand, this is the basis of all science today, the requirement to find an answer, in physics especially searching for the theory which explains them all, but i think this misses the point. The answers that have been driven by this need have found solutions to many problems with our lives on this earth and also paradoxically turned our race into a destructive force.

You can only judge when you have the answer whether or not it needed to be answered in the first place laugh.gif what a paradox!

I dont feel that any of our answers will be the answer, they may be applicable to other aspects of our lives that we experience but in general they are all a part of the wonder of life and consciousness itself. It can only be.

laugh.gif Somehow i always manage to go drastically off topic. Its everyone elses fault though for inspiring me linked-image

NICE ONE!

It is human nature to try and explain the unknown.
