I'm gobsmacked. It just makes me so sick. Apparantly the mother had a myspace site where she talk about what a wonderful Mum she is, & the new baby she just had.

I can only imagine that it's been all over the news.

It sickens me to read crimes like this against anyone let alone children... A 4 year old little girl, she is still a baby.... I can't begin to imagine what else she had endured in those 4 years.

Couple make first appearance in child's death

SPOKANE -- The parents of a four-year-old girl who was murdered over the weekend appeared in court Monday in a case that one veteran police detective has called the worst case of abuse he has ever seen.

Jonathan Lytle, 28, and Adriana Lytle, 32, the father and stepmother of the victim, appeared in court Monday after they were arrested Sunday and charged with the young girl’s death. Both are being held on a $500,000 bond.

They were arrested after Jonathan Lytle had taken his daughter to Deaconess Medical Center late Saturday night bruised from head to toe and had varying degrees of bruising that revealed a potentially long-term cycle of abuse.

The victim, who was apparently developmentally disabled, was also allegedly made to wear a shock collar, which is typically used for dogs, in her parents’ attempts to discipline her.

"There was the use of a electric dog training collar used on this girl," Sergeant Joe Peterson of the Spokane Police Department said. "And what's even more dreadful is that isn't even nearly the worst of it."

The child allegedly suffered a variety of other injuries brought on by beatings with belts and spoons and had human bite marks on her body. According to court documents, Jonathan Lytle admitted to police after being told of his rights to remain silent that the girl had kicked Adriana in the chin and Adriana had responded by biting the girl.

Peterson added the girl had injuries "from her feet to the top of her head" and investigators would have to wait until the conclusion of an autopsy to determine the full range of injuries the child sustained.

On Saturday a nurse was paying a visit to the Lytles' apartment to look at their 8-month-old son and Jonathan Lytle took his daughter out of the apartment so as not to disturb the nurse while she checked out the infant boy. Later after the nurse left he returned and his daughter was made to wash clothes and towels soaked in urine in the apartment's bathtub while she was standing inside of it.

Adriana later told police during an interview that the child frequently wet herself and that she resorted to both dunking the child in water and forcing her to wash her clothes while standing inside of the bathtub with her feet together, bending over at the waist while she washed her soiled clothes.

"My house, my rules," Adriana reportedly told police during her interview. "You're not at mommy's house anymore."

At one point, according to the affidavit of probable cause, Adriana - who had been cooking a dinner to celebrate the couple's first wedding anniversary on Saturday - went into the bathroom and found the girl unresponsive and lying on her back in the bathtub filled with water and urine.

Adriana allegedly tried to perform CPR "using her hands and feet"; Jonathan came into assist but at one point left the room to go have a cigarette. While trying to revive the girl Adriana repotedly said, "We might have killed her" and Jonathan took his daughter to Deaconess Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead shortly after she arrived.

"They had concocted a story the child fallen down one time to cause these injuries," Sergeant Peterson said.

Doctors and nurses informed investigators as soon as they arrived at Deaconess Saturday night the child had been abused. Nurses who were attending to the child went into the room to help and almost universally came out crying.

Once investigators got an opportunity to see the child for themselves, a single cursory glance was all it took to see the four-year-old girl had suffered abuse over a long period of time.

"This is the worst case I've ever seen and my detectives feel the same," Peterson said. "It's probably the worst case of abuse that any of us in hundreds of combined years in this unit have ever seen."

"It's beyond abuse ... it's abuse by torture."

The family lived in unit 25 at the Dresden Apartments, located at 707 North Monroe in downtown Spokane. The child had only been living with her father and stepmother since last August. Lytle told investigators that the girl's biological mother had asked if she could live with Jonathan and Adriana for a month but never made an attempt to regain custody of the child.

The second child in the Lytle's home, an eight-month-old boy, was taken and placed in foster care Saturday night.

SPOKANE, Wash. - A 4-year-old Spokane girl stopped breathing in the bathtub after her stepmother left her alone after forcing her to wash soiled items for more than 10 hours as punishment for urinating on herself, according to court records.

Summer Lytle suffered a pattern of abuse that included a dog-shock collar, burns to her face, a bite mark and extensive bruising extending from her upper thighs to the top of her head, court documents said.

Her father, Jonathan D. Lytle, 28, and stepmother, Adriana L. Lytle, 32, have been charged with homicide by abuse in Summer's death Saturday night. They remain in the Spokane County Jail on $500,000 bond each.

Court documents said that during police interviews, both Jonathan and Adriana Lytle admitted that they had severely punished Summer in the seven months the girl had lived with them.

"This included the use of a dog's training shock collar, beatings with leather belts, beatings with spoons and making Summer tear pizza boxes into tiny pieces," the documents said. "Both said the shock collar was used about five or six times, but did not seem to have the desired effect."

Meanwhile, the state Department of Social and Health Services on Tuesday released some information regarding its case files on Summer Lytle, and said more would be released later.

"What is very unfortunate about this case is that we did not receive any referrals alleging the severe abuse outlined in the court documents ...," said Martin Butkovich, regional administrator for children's services in Spokane. "It appears that the family did its best to hide the abuse from people who might have seen something and reported it to us."

The agency first came into contact with Summer and her father on June 1, 2005, when Jonathan Lytle notified DSHS that Summer was left in his care by her mother.

Summer's biological mother and father made allegations against each other, including sexual abuse and neglect, DSHS said.

The case was closed, and the family did not come to DSHS attention again until Summer was pronounced dead at a Spokane hospital, the agency said.

Jonathan and Adriana Lytle appeared Monday before Spokane County District Court Commissioner Charles Rohr. Jonathan Lytle kept his head down as Rohr read a police report describing the little girl's ordeal, including how he left the room to have a cigarette as Adriana Lytle was attempting to resuscitate Summer.

Adriana Lytle told a detective the girl had urinated on towels and clothes so she placed the girl in the bathtub to clean those items. The parents told police they made the girl wash items from about 10:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. Saturday, when Adriana Lytle pushed Summer with her foot "causing Summer to fall into the urine-filled water."

"Later in the evening, while Summer was again washing items out in the tub, Adriana found her unresponsive in the water," police records said. Both tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate her and Jonathan Lytle said he took Summer to Deaconess Medical Center, where she could not be revived.

Shortly after midnight Saturday, officers went to the Lytles' apartment, and were let inside by the manager.

"Officers made entry and found Adriana Lytle and her 8-month-old son in the apartment. Adriana Lytle commented, 'The reason I didn't answer the door is because Jon told me not to when the police came,'" court records stated.

Jonathan Lytle, a welder who moved to Spokane about 18 months ago from the Everett area, told officers that Summer's biological mother, who had custody of her, called in August and asked if Summer could stay in Spokane for a month with the Lytles, but never came back to get her.

Police were unable to contact or locate Summers biological mother until Tuesday. But investigators confirmed the mother lives in Poulsbo, Wash., and police arranged for her to be notified by her father.

"Jon said Summer is a difficult child and can be abusive to herself and had damaged the apartment on occasion," police reports said. "Jon said he was aware that Adriana had recently bitten Summer after Summer had kicked Adriana in the chin."

The reports said, "Adriana described Summer as defiant, a 'handful' and destructive and she wished Summer had never come to live with them."

An autopsy was being performed to determine what specifically killed Summer, Sgt. Joe Peterson said.

Well, that's true. But, it doesnt take away the fact of all she had to endure... WHERE WAS EVERYONE?? Aren't we supposed to take care of those that are weaker than us? In all the homes around this little girl, not one person shown concern, apparently no one cared enough. UGh. We really should pay more attention to our helpless.

the death penalty? you really think these two soul-less things should get off the hook that lightly? i say torture them to the point of death but keep them alive. this poor little girl didn't deserve any of that. death is too much of an easy way out for these creatures.

What kind of manure is this? How does a child get bruises & scars from head to toe & BITE MARKS cause they "fell once". That' simply isn't possible! I grew up a tomboy, I fell down TONS UPON TONS of times! I have scars too, but not from head to toe!!! Not even those crazy people who do all those stunts on skateboard or bikes (motorized or not) have scars from head to toe!!! It is simply a load of you-know.

As to them doing this to a developmentally disabled little child that is just sickening. It makes me want to cry. I have a dear friend who's daughter is autistic. He has done everything he can to care for her & let her know she is loved, even if he may never know if she's really "receiving" it. He told me that having her in his life he's learned amazing things about love & life.

These "parents" are the ones that are really develpmentally lacking! I hope they get the death penalty. They didn't deserve that little girl. Constantly reading about things like this is probably enough for the angels to go on strike! Maybe even quit all together! The evil of man to man makes me sicker everytime I hear an evening news broadcast.

I personally find this case extremely upsetting because (maybe*) my daughter too, suffers from Autism. & it hits home little too damn hard...and not that if the girl (wasn't) challenged this abuse would be any more justified.. it absolutely wouldn't.... it just pounds on me more personally, somewhere thru the heart area (hope you folks understand what I mean).

In October of 2006, CPS investigated a report that Summer was being neglected. Nonetheless, they found no cause for action, and the case was closed. Yesterday, in an interview with The Spokesman-Review, Kathy Spears, a spokeswoman for the Washington Department of Social and Human Services, defended her department's actions.

"Usually we close a case when the threat of abuse or neglect is diminished," Spears said. "Nobody called in saying they had seen this child covered in bruises. I'm not going to second-guess what happened with this investigation."

Sad enough, her myspace is still up. I read that & wonder, is it possible that this woman strike that--this monster could have fooled all her friends and family? And if that's the case, it starts me in questioning my judgment in people. Can I know someone as evil as this and not be aware?

Sadly that is illegal, it would be inhumane to treat people the same way they treat others. They do deserve to be tortured in every single way that little girl was, if only the courts would allow it.

I'm one to say I've personally met "evil" similar to this filth. You have to believe me when I say- no matter how convincing some of these devils/people are, and how they attempt try to hide it, the evil pierces thru somehow or someway in the beginning. You have to listen well to your intincts. Your gut.

After reading this i want to cry, and i wish i could take Summer in to my arms and show her love and kindness and warmth and what a childhood should be for a four year old. How could people prey on someone so helpless to themselves??
Summer wouldnt have had any idea to why all the tourture she went through occured.
To think that if she survived and thought that treatment was the norm makes me angrey as well.
How can you hate someone to the point of killing them when they have no idea of what they are doing?? She was disabled and they had no patients.

I think people are so afraid of being sued or whathave you they don't get invovled. My heart just breaks for that little girl and all the horrors she had to endure in her short nightmare of a life! And in this case the death penalty is way too good for these monsters! At one point in the artical the step monster says"My house my rules" Well put her in jail where the guards and inmates tell her, Now your in our house and your going to experience our rules!!! This poor child had three adult parents in her life and not one of them cared about her in the least! Why don,t people like that at least surrender their children to someone who will love and care for them?

Did you see Adriana's picture? She looks exactly like a person that would do something like that to a poor child! She also looks like a drug addict to me. Those people are sick, cruel monsters and they need to be kept in solitary confinement, maybe even an asylum, and tortured. Let them feel Summer's pain! For the love of god, she was only four. Nobody should die that young, and especialy not like that! And the mother should be placed "center of the crime" for leaving her with those monsters.

Wow, and I thought I had it bad. My parents argue and yell at me a lot, but at least they take care of me. What kind of heartless fiend would torture their own child like this? Both of em?!? I know the child was mentally challenged but it seems like the parents were the real nut cases. And they have the nerve to tell the police that the bite marks were from "Falling down the stairs".
