This is my first, really, truly, serious topic EVER.
Whenever I start looking for something good to read on UM, I keep finding "locked down" topics or posts with real bad language, though I've had my fair share of "locked down" stuff. So, I'm posting three questions:
1. Why do some people post stuff when they know it's, well, "illegal"?
2. Now, I was reading the rules before this, and the promotion and request of firearms, knives, propaganda, etc., is illegal. Should that list be greater than that, or is that too much worrying on my part?
3. I've traded in my badge of sarcasm for a larger badge of ingorance and American justice. Lt. ChupaKing is ready for duty! My patrol-hearse is still running, producing dark Satanic greenhouse gases, as the guide book describes it. Should we work harder to prevent forest fir----I mean, locked down posts and topics?

I don't know why people start threads off in the first place if they contain illegal subjects, it seems like such a waste of time and energy. They're just going to be stopped anyway lol

...you have five closed topics in your own name.
Enough said.

Well since you've only made four topics and none of them are closed...guess.

1. Why do some people post stuff when they know it's, well, "illegal"?
Simple. 90% of registered posters don't read the rules.
I know I haven't. I'm registered with dozens of forums. When I'm about to join a forum I lurk for a bit and get the feel of the community so I know how far I can push the envelope.
Also who has the time to sit down and read through paragraphs of information on what you can and can't do when it's easier to just use common sense.
I come from far more...less moderated...sites so sometimes I go a little far

(not saying the mods are nazi's - just saying some forums couldn't be bothered enforcing rules or even having them) so sometimes I go a little far

Actually, the rules page isn't long to read at all, Manfred

. If I have the concentration to read them anybody can

.

Oh...never bothered to actually click 'Rules'

I just assumed it was going to be long and drawn-out like most forums.
Holy crap...just checked it out...the stuff I get away with...*hides*

I saw that there was a thread proposing an 18+ room, and I saw that the idea was basically rejected.
To me, there have been several good threads that were locked when they could have been moved to an 18+ section. The stated reason for locking the threads was that people were being disrespectful of eachother's beliefs. This was somewhat true, but it was no worse than in hundreds of threads that weren't locked. I had the feeling that the threads just pushed the envelope a little too far (moderators here are very tolerant, so perhaps I should say "way" too far).
Don't mean to complain. This is a great forum.

I suppose the trouble with an 18+ section is that how do you stop an under 18 getting in there. That's the problem with this net lark, no-one ever really knows who anyone else is lol.
I agree this a great forum that's for sure - I can't get off it, but it's a flaming good site!

Some people post illegal items because they haven't read the UM rules or they are spamming and haven't read UM rules.
There aren't that many, but the list increases as some bozos have thought up new ways to circumvent the neat process. One newbie Bob something.... for instance was posting huge amounts of garbage without listing sources. Led to the recent banner at the top of current affairs.

There isn't actually an 18+ section on the site, it was only being discussed as a possibility by some of our members.
There are currently no plans to implement an age-restricted area to the forum.

Actually, I didn't see any new rules, just an expansion and clarification of existing rules. The UM rules section had been pretty thorough about posting sources and plagiarism. Some people were not reading the rules and the ADMIN felt a stronger message was necessary. That was probably due to some recent litigation involving other forum websites and plagiarism.

Previously, as long as a source was provided, posting long cut and paste articles in their entirety was not actually disallowed. That has now changed as specified by this part of rule 12:
QUOTE
Members are asked to copy only as much as is necessary when quoting copyrighted material from other web sites. Quoting the first couple of paragraphs or so should be more than enough, reproducing entire articles in your posts is unnecessary.

That's why you capture peoples interest (with a paragraph or two) then produce a link for further indulging.
