A rare treat from nature: Perfect snow doughnuts
By Susan Gilmore

Snow doughnuts, like these found in the North Cascades, form when snow conditions are just right.

No, it's not a promotion for Winchell's or Krispy Kreme.

"This is no joke. We did not build it," said Mike Stanford, an avalanche-control expert with the state Department of Transportation (WSDOT). "They are a natural occurrence in nature." Stanford found frozen doughnuts of snow on the top of Washington Pass in the North Cascades this week when he was doing avalanche-control work.

Interesting article, "Lady in the water" original.gif

Well, speaking of Krispy Kremes, I'm embarrassed to say I stood in a long line for one hour waiting for the first Krispy Kreme donut shop to open up here in Oregon. I had heard of these donuts and how good they were, only to find out it wasn't worth the wait. If you want real donuts, go to Dunkin' donuts or they have some great tasting donuts at your local supermarket.

2003 was the year I saw the snow rollers on our way to Hutsonville, Illinois. We saw hundreds of these basketball size and smaller snow rollers, doughnuts, egg rolls, or whatever name fits as well.

The universities and power plants were caught in a cold spell with low supplies of fossilized black gold. So we managed to see these mid-Illinois snow doughnuts for the first time. Terre Haute, Indiana TV, radio and CB radio Ha! covered it well!
