So guys me and gigan were talking about some "evil dog" attacking churches a few hundred years ago and it interested me a lot, he provided me with this link http://www.edp24.co.uk/Content/Features/Sp.../BlackSHuck.asp which talks a lot about the black shuck, which is supposed to be an evil huge dog with fire in his eye sockets who killed victims in the 1500's, but what interested me most was the experiences told by people, modern people, like this one.

When I was 14 years old I went to visit my friends dads house in the country, I can't quite remember where abouts it was but at was in Suffolk. Anyway, he was driving me home one night along a long country road. It was late but there was still some light. I could see we were approaching a main road ahead and gazed at all the cars passing fast infront of us, there was a perfect view of all the traffic and all the lights. Then I saw a huge black creature running alongside the speedy road in front! It was half the height of the cars passing by and seemed to effortlessly begin to overtake them. It was in the shape of a dog or wolf, only much bigger. I thought my mind was playing tricks on me but then my friends dad said 'wow what was that?, a deer perhaps?' I said ' What, overtaking cars on a 70mph road?' and I realised that what had just happened was quite extraordinary.

this one too

We holidayed on the Norfolk coast, one thundery evening my 6yr old son and I drove along the coast to find a shop open to get a pint of milk. I parked up then noticed my son had nodded off in the backseat so ran into the shop and left him there. On returning to the car my son was sat upright in the back, shaking with a face as white as a sheet. I thought he had just been scared of the thunder, but as I opened the car door I was alerted to a rustling in the trees infront of the car and saw what can only be described as an extremely huge scruffy dog heading away. My son was sat starring motionless at where the dog had disappeared. I asked if he was ok and what was the matter, he answered that he had just seen a werewolf! I laughed and said "Don't be silly, it was just a big dog" but he said "No, it had orange fireballs in its eyes and it tried to get in the car". The following morning when packing up the car I was astounded to find big muddy pawprints on the bonnet and the back windows! I found your website quite by accident and had a nosey, I got shivers down my spine when I read about BLACK SHUCK.

and this one

Craig Jenkins has also seen Black Shuck:
Between 1978 and 1985 I was a Policeman in the Suffolk Constabulary, Lowestoft Division attached to Halesworth Subdivision. One winter's night I was on patrol in my panda car travelling North on the A12 road just North of Blythburgh when a huge black dog as big as a child's pony charged across the road from the trees on the West side of the road and crossed over onto the marshes on the East side of the road, I braked to a standstill and watched the animal run out of sight into a mist on the marshes. The dog appeared to be like a mongrel x wolfhound type animal and its coat was wiry and either greying or muddy.
I later became a dog handler at Lowestoft before migrating to Australia and I can honestly say that was like no other dog I have ever seen I would say. That I could clearly see 30 seconds before it was gone in the mist.It was a moonlit night. It was after
this episode that I noticed the story of Black Chucc in a local newspaper.
Another night about a year later I was stationed at Aldeburgh and every six weeks one of us had to work night shift patrolling from Saxmundham to Blythburgh incorporating Aldeburgh and Leiston.
On this night I thought I saw something in the graveyard of Blythburgh Church and as I checked the building looking for roofing lead thieves I shone my torch on the church doors and there were these huge scratch marks and scorching clearly visible. At that very moment I heard the most bloodcurdling howl of some beast comming from the marsh beyond the graveyard. I was terrified and ran back to my car and got the hell out of there as fast as I could. I made it my busines to never go near that place again.
Recounting this event tpo you has put the hairs up on the back of my neck again as if it had only just happened.

I'd like to know if anyone's seen such a creature, cause I have a very close friend who admitted to me of having dreamed about a "black big evil dog with fire in his eye sockets" she doesnt know about the black shuck though.. she is still terrified by this dream. crying.gif

Sounds almost like the Sherlock Holmes story "The Hound of the Baskervilles". Other than that I have never heard of it before.

I've heard of Black Shuck too, isn't he supposed to be some kind of Hellhound?? unsure.gif

I don't know much about him/it tho but it's an interesting story...oddly enough he seems to be mostly a British phenomenon, unless these big black dogs with red eyes are known elsewhere by different names??

Anyone ever heard of scary dogs like this in your area???

P.S. If I ever saw one, I'd do just like that cop did over in England and run like hell LOL!

The Darkness did a song about it called Black Shuck. Would have thought someone called Glam Elite Rock Singer might have known it.

My thoughts exactly. This is the first time I hear of a Black Shuck. I just read a few articles off links and it's an interesting read so far. It's turning out to be a fantastic urban legend.

rofl.gif True! It was a particularly good song. The lyrics actually tell the story of the attack on the church quite well!

In a town in the east
The parishioners were visited upon
By a curious beast
And his eyes numbered but one and shone like the sun
And a glance beckoned the immediate loss
Of a cherished one
It was the coming of the

Flames licked round the sacred spire
And the congregation's last line of defence

As the flaming priest stepped into the firing line
On the business end of despair
God, he took his own life
During the coming of the

It's evident just by looking at the first three lines of this post that black dog sightings are numerous...
Black Dogs are the most frequently reported ghostly animals. In fact they are treated as something of a phenomenon in their own right. There are so many reports that only a sample are included here and occasionally only a mention of a local name in order to show the widespread nature of the subject.
Sax Rohmer spent a night in Peel Castle on the Isle of Man where a legendary phantom dog haunts the underground passages near the guards' quarters. Reports of this dog became so frequent that they were almost a part of the guardsmen's daily lives, although they insisted on giving them a wide berth. One guardsman entering the guardroom alone, ran back to his colleagues, obviously very frightened but was never able to talk about what he had seen in the short life remaining to him.
Rohmer heard doglike howls coming from inside the blocked-up passageway where the guardroom had been.
Rohmer beleived that the dog dated from early pagan rituals.

Daniel Cohen's Encyclopedia of Ghosts tells of the black dog which haunts the Vaughan family, its appearances heralding the death of one of them. One of the Vaughan children contracted smallpox. At dinner, the mother said she'd go up to look after him. She came down saying the child was alright but asked her husband to scare away a large black dog that was lying on the bed. She had not been told the family legend, to avoid worrying her. Fearing the worst, he ran upstairs and could find no dog... The child was dead.

In Budleigh Hill, Somerset a black dog was seen in 1907, with 'great fiery eyes as big as saucers'. There is a similar description in Trollers Gill in Yorkshire.

The most horrific encounter took place in Bungay, Suffolk. On the morning of August 4th 1577 there was mass going on in the church, when suddenly a black dog burst in through the door, reportedly striking dead two praying bystanders, one of which 'shrivelled up like a dry purse'... One account goes like this:

QUOTE
Immediately hereupon, there appeared in a most horrible similitude and likenesse to the congregation then and there present a dog as they might discerne it, of a black colour; at the site whereof, togither with the fearful flashes of fire which were then seene, moved such admiration in the minds of the assemblie, that they thought doomesday was already come. This black dog, or the divil in such a likenesse (God hee knoweth all who worketh all) running all along down the body of the church with great swiftnesse and incredible haste, among the people, in a visible fourm and shape, passed betweene two persons, as they were kneeling upon their knees, and occupied in prayer as it seemed, wrung the necks of them bothe at one instant clene backward, in so much that even at a moment where they kneeled, they strangely died… There was at ye same time another wonder wrought; for the same black dog, still continuing and remaining in one and the self same shape, passing by another man of the congregation in the church, gave him such a gripe on the back, that therewith all he was presently drawen togither and shrunk up ,as it were a peece of lether scorched in a hot fire; or as the mouth of a purse or bag, drawen togither with string. The man albeit hee was in so strange a taking, dyed not, but as it is thought is yet alive: whiche thing is mervelous in the eyes of men, and offereth much matter of amasing the minde...

I rock so much harder on my bass guitar than the Darkness. Though, i do believe that was a pretty decent song by them. Still say they are a wanna be Queen group though IMHO.

But i have heard about this though, to get back on the subject. Black Shuck, an interesting thing i must say.

Ah, the deviness that is known as a Six String...-smiles at it's awesomeness- But dang dude, I lucked up on getting a five string Fender for a really cheap price out in Wisconsin. And to add, you never lose touch with what you love, no matter how little you practice on it.

Edit: When I get home, i'll tell you exactly what it is. Can't remember right off hand, with my brain being fried working all night and what not.

Black Shuck made an appearance in a notorious murder case from the 1940s involving the , then famous, Inspector Fabian of Scotland Yard. Here and Here . Whilst Fabian was investigating the case he came a across a large strange looking "Black Dog" that walked past him in one of the lanes near where the murder happened. Upon asking the locals to whom the dog belonged , Fabian was met with a wall of silence and from that point on the investigation simply tailed off and , to this day, remains unsolved.

Ack forgot to add... Anyone who has seen the movie Night/Curse of the Demon B & W 1957 starring Dana Andrews and Peggy Cummins. the *baddie* lives at a place called Lufford Hall in Warwickshire and the guy who throws himself from the window , a farmer who is part of Carstairs cult, is from Warwickshire as well. I do think this was a veiled reference to the case i mentioned above.
