I dug into my vault of personal experiences to present this story to you in full... this actually happened to me and a few other people...
some of the people on here know that i use to work at a community college here in vegas... i started out working 2pm - 10pm... then switched my shift to 10pm - 6am... this experience happened on the graveyard shift...
there were 3 of us working one night... Mike, my supervisor was out on patrol at about 1am... he called me on the radio and said a woman was calling for help at the D-Tower 3rd floor... so i swung the camera around since i was working surveilance for the hour... i didn't see anything...
he said that it was getting louder and he was going to look around... he decided to take the stairs since all the buildings were locked and he didn't want to open that particular one back up to check it out... he gets to the third floor and there is a cat sitting there screaming "help" lmao...
mike gets back to the security desk and is pale white... lol... and of course, i'm not really believing a word of it... i just think he is on some good medicine... lol... but he is freaked out and doesn't want to go back outside... the next day... my girlfriend comes to see me at about 1:30am... at the B Building... we sat out on the porch/eating area and talked... maybe 15 minutes into our conversation... i hear "help" really low... so of course, i think mike is playing a joke... or maybe even one of maintainance crew... so i told my girlfriend the story... and she thought it was funny...
a few minutes later, i hear "help" again... still didn't think much of it... but it started to get louder and closer... so now, i'm thinking... this sh** is kind of creepy.. even if it is mike... my girlfriend thinks it's funny... so we just sit and keep talking... then we hear "help" again... but it's coming from right behind where she is sitting... she looks at me kind of creeped out about it and turns around... and of course there is a cat sitting right there... "f*** that i'm going in side" is exactly what i said to her... lol...
turns out.. maintanance had their share of the talking cat too...
fast forward about 2 weeks... the African guy Sam starts working grave with us... he is from Kenya... and we were talking one night... about 3 or 4 of us... just sharing stories... and he starts telling us about talking cats on the coast of Africa... needless to say... we were all freaked out for about a month... when i stopped working there... the cat was still talking... lol...
oh and i think it fair to mention that somebody suggested that we were just hearing "meow" but i know the difference between the sound a cat makes and the voice of a woman saying "help"
has anyone else here ever experienced a talking cat?

Our male cat does too! Really! When he comes in as my wife call to him I swear he is saying "Mama!"
He also very much can make his meows sound like a question. Really!
He definately has a distinct set of meows and other vocalizations he uses to communicate with us. Seriously, I don't think he's really "speaking" per se. I do think he's intellegent enough to have learned over his life time what sounds mean him (his name), that my wife says she's his 'mama', and when we say something like "Do you want to eat?" he picks up on the sound of the questionable aspect of the sentence. Very intellegent of him.

everything everyone posts on here is 'suspect' to someone... but if you are talking about the pic of the thing in the house.. maybe you should try actually reading before you make stupid comments... not everyone feels the way you do because some people actually know how to read... before they comment... so they don't sound ignorant...

Cats can sound like they're 'talking' .... they have very distinguished voice patterns and volumes. Fascinating creatures, if only you pay attention to them with an open mind....nothing to be spooked about.

my sister has several cats. when in heat, they sound like they are saying help, but it is just a way to let other cats know that they are available. nothing spooky about it, nothing unnatural about it. the mentioned cat was in heat and looking for a mate.

really? had me fooled...
because mum is referring to a thread where i specifically stated that i made up a story... and that was before i started the story... it was in the "urban legends" section... i started the post by saying... i made this up... mum ASSUMED i was talking about a photo...
since when did a story and a photo become the same thing? so for mum, i had to break it down like a 3 year old... but sometimes you have to do things like that for people who can't comprehend what they read....
and mum...
of course i know what you are talking about... it was just 2 days ago... i remember because i was thinking "this person doesn't know the difference between a story and a photo, so why are they acting like they know what they are talking about"?
by the way... at last count, i only saw 2 people that agreed with you on that post... the rest of the people are pretty damn smart...
because they know the definition of 'urban legend' lol...
which is more than i can say for you and the 2 other people who don't comprehend to well...

I taught my dog (a chocolate Lab)to say "I Love You". Of course, without the proper vocal tools it sounds more like "Ah Wuf Woo".......but he definitely says it and knows what it means....at least he knows it means affection. One time when my son was visiting he brought his beagle with him. She did not warm up to my dog at all, and would only growl at him if he got too close. One of the times she growled at him he looked at her sadly and said 'Ah Wuf Woo". It was hilarious.
In recent months he has begun saying "wah wah" for "water". When the water dish is empty and he needs a drink he will gesture with his snout toward the dish and say "wah wah". The way I see it, if animals can understand so much of what we say to them....as in commands, etc., it isn't inconceivable to think of them attempting to speak in our language to us. According to our vet, most Labs understand human language at about the same rate as a 5 year old human child.
Cats are very smart as well, so it wouldn't surprise me to hear of a cat attempting to talk........but in the case of the cat that said "help", I agree with Odd Christian. Cats in heat really do sound like they are crying "help". I've heard it before, a few times.

Earthchick that is such a cute story. Thanks for sharing that!
I also agree with you and Odd Christian. Cats in heat can make some very interesting sounds. Most of the time they sound really creepy.
We have a few who wander around here (not my cats, mine are neutered and indoors!). The cats often stay out all night yowling, getting into fights, etc. Some of the sounds they make, you would almost think they were possessed!

They can make creepy sounds, I agree. What astounds me about cats is their extraordinary vocal range.... they have all sorts of sounds, from chirrups to purring meows to growls, squeaks, ordinary meows and more!!
I love talking to my cat in its language.. God knows what I say... he seems to understand!!

CE......if you have a Lab in the family you know how quick they are to learn......and what is the best tool to teach them with....treats. LOL. It really was pretty easy. I just dangled a dog treat in front of him and said "Say I love you", saying the "I love you" a bit slowly, and after about 4 or 5 tries he actually did it. The first several times he had to be coaxed with a treat, but after that he hasn't really needed a treat. If we say it to him he will say it back, and he often will just say it as a greeting when we come home and he's all wiggly with joy at the sight of us. LOL. He's 3 years old now, but he was only a year old when he learned to say it. I suppose it's not much different than teaching a dog to "speak" by barking to them so they will copy it. And yeah, I really do need to get a video of it. I'd like to have a record of it for some day in the future when he's no longer with us. I'm going to try to get him to do it while I'm filming and when I do I'll post it on UM.
Edit: I think he clued in really quickly to the fact that it conveys affection because we always say it to him when we hug or pet him.

Mithra, I am sorry for your loss. I know what it's like to lose a much beloved cat. At least you still have her kitten to care for. And I believe that the love between cats and their humans never dies, and that you will be reunited with her someday. (Not on this earth, of course) I'm getting all teary myself............my much beloved Baxter passed away last October. I found him on the freeway 17 1/2 years ago, trying to climb a concrete wall to get away from the traffic. His little paws were bloody from the attempt. We were together almost every day since then. I'm only now realizing that he is gone, I think I've been in shock. And people who have never had a close relationship with an animal don't understand, and trivialize the death of a loved pet. To me, Baxter was my family.

I can't wait to see that video! My guy's not very vocal unless he's barking at something. He's just not much of a whiner. My lab before him was tho, but I don't know how easy it'd be to get him to 'say' anything. It would be awesome! He is a quick learner but he is 6 years old now. He'd prolly just give me THAT look, you know? LOL
