It will launch on the 360 and PS3 on the same day...I'm assuming that the PC version will come later like it always has.

A little over ten hours left!

NYC = sh**ty. we've done it damnit. TWICE. I was hoping for, i dunno, Toyko or something.
More serious tone is a plus, i was getting bored of the same old cheese and offense humour.

I'm happy with it for the most part, but will need to see more. One city though, from what we know, is really weak. Almost feels like a step back, not that San Andreas was much of a step forward.

Looks ammmmazing. I hope its more than just NY, because as said, been done! But i have faith.

New York and maybe Jersey, I am looking forward to the many mafia opportunities this game has.

Will a PS2 version be coming out?

New York.......BOOOOOO!!!! as that guy above me said been there done that

Russian character thats good but what aboot a female lead?

Rumour is that its not just New yOrk that it will be similar to Grand theft auto 1 and 2 where you go to different citys whether true or not remains to be seen

I think its like true crime New york where it will be quite similar to the city on a vaery large scale. City supposed to be four times bigger then sanandreas all put together

New York again? sleepy.gif

Your not the only one. I have the old Xbox.
I buy the limited Xbox360 with 120 gb hd and HDMI output.
The only thing that the Playstation 3 makes expensive is the Blu-Ray drive. I am not buying it, who needs Blu-Ray if you have HD-DVD.

Liberty City is New York City.
As shown in the trailer, the city is Liberty City. (The boats have it written on them, and there's a building called the Libertine Newspaper, etc.)

GTA3, the game that started it ALL, was set entirely in Liberty City. As was.. Liberty City Stories.

blink.gif
rhyknow
So the cities in GTA2 and the original weren't based on any cities in particular? Hmmm
BurnSide
They might have been, but it's pretty difficult to tell when you only have an overhead view of some random city in very poor graphics.

Yeah I see that but but Liberty City in those games looked nothing like New York, I'm not sure about liberty city stories.

ah crap one of our NYC politicians already calling Rockstar out.

BurnSide
The city was actually changed to look less like NYC in GTA3, because of the then recent terrorist attacks that occured during production of the game. Originally you could fly in it properly, and there were alot of differences in the Bridges and Docks and city core areas that did make it look much more NYCish.

But because of 9/11 they removed the ability to fly, figuring it would be too offensive if you could re enact the terrorist attacks i guess. And they removed a bunch of other New Yorkie things.

This one is definitely the first time the Statue of Liberty has been used and various other location. But it is still the same city.
I'm choosing to think of GTA4 as a remake with a new story, if all it is is Liberty City. Very dissapointing.

hahah yeah, i'm suprised it took this long actually for some kind of idiot politician born with a stick shoved up the buttocks to get his knickers in a twist over the game. Jack Thompson is keeping quiet so far. Weird!
Super Pancake

That Cathedral one i definitely remember seeing in GTA3. There were some missions beside it, and a hidden package lol.

Pretty neat compasions, thanks for posting them.
Cadetak
I hope this isn't just a fresh coat of paint and hopefully adds something really new to the franchise...like a new targeting system, and a better sense of realism...and maybe missions that are not repetitive, boring, and linear.

Real co-op wouldn't hurt either(not that BS from SA).

I really want to see GTA4 have a big improvement...like a GTA2 to GTA3 improvement.

I'm okay with Liberty City again because it doesn't seem to be the same one from GTA3. But I'm wondering how big the city is actually going to be...it has bin said that the 'map' or 'playing area' isn't going to be nearly as big as San Andreas(I thought it was too big honestly).

I hope they put in a real combat and driving system this time around...something less chaotic and more real.
BurnSide
Did anyone play Rockstars previous GTAish game, BULLY?

They seem to be taking a real lesson from Bully in GTA4. In previous installments of the GTA series, the character could sprint across an entire field or several blocks in a matter of seconds, and drive across an entire city in a minute or two. It was unrealistic and basically happened because scaling and detailing of the locations versus speed of the character were way of.

In Bully, they corrected this issue. The three towns you played through were all connected like San Andreas, but they were very small towns and it was a pretty small map. However, because of the high detail and proper scaling in it, and etc, it actually made the map feel much much much bigger, like you're actually going through a real town instead of a little scale model of one.
I expect in GTA4 it'll be the same, the city will be scaled properly so instead of in GTA3 where you could drive all of the city in 3 minutes, it'll actually take, driving, somewhere closer to 15 minutes to drive from one end of the city to the other. It isn't a bigger map.. but it is, if you follow.
Super Pancake
Well I hope its not that much to scale cause damn it can take an hour or more if you follow the traffic rules and regulations (speed limit, red/yellow/green lights, etc) to get from one end of NYC to the other and in heavy traffic forget about it, and if public transportation is in GTA trains, buses, and ferry to get to Staten Island it can be even longer.

It would be awesome if NYC is at correct scale that is realism on on another level, but man imagine one of those carrier mission take a package to Downtown Brooklyn from Jamaica Queens and do it under 20 minutes.
BurnSide
I for one actually hope it is like that. Instead of the same old crummy missions that you have to do over and over with slight variations, it's actually all realistic, and the game takes longer because travelling takes so much longer.

What i also really, really really hope for, is correct day/night time. Real time, if you will. Say you can in the PS3 choose your timezone and put the time in your PS3, that same time will be reflected in the game itself. So when it's sunset outside for you, it's sunset in the game. And if you play at 2am, it's 2am in the game. Not this stupid 1 minute = 1 hour thing that we've had for all of the GTA series so far, that's just starting to get old.

Realism Rockstar, realism! Although i don't want to wait on a bus for 30 mins to get downtown in the game. laugh.gif So i'm not sure how they could incorporate things like public transport into real time. They can't skip the journey, cause that will muck the time up. Perhaps you can control the character on the bus or train, jump out the window whenever or start a fight and get kicked off or something.

I just want to see a GTA game done right. They've always felt sloppy. Massively fun, but the same stuff over and over, and sloppy. This could be amazing, if it's done right. Proper times for traveling and day/night, then we'll work from there.
evil_E.T
^^
i think it'd be good if you culd travel to different cities as well. surely it'd be better to have two cities each half the size of new york, rather than like one big one.
it'd be good as well if you couldn't carry all your twenty odd guns around with you, but you could keep some of them in your car with you, but leave some at your safe house, and pick what you want to carry with you for each mission....and buildings you can go in as well.

I think Madden for the wii does the weather thing.

Real time public transportation would be cool, instead of a skip in time and travel would be cool too.

The scale of the city I can deal with since I like to drive around in GTA, I loved just driving, cycling and walking just for sightseeing a scaled city would be real cool. But real time would really suck if you want to get a mission going! Lets say a mission or contact is at 1:00 am but its 2:00pm you telling me I'm going to have to wait 12 hours and on top of that wake up in the middle of the night to play it, laugh.gif .

Burnside I'm glad you don't make games. I'm all for more realism but real world time is a hard thing to mess with i guess thats another reason why GTA scale of its city was small too, because if 1 minute represented an hour then that meant you did one hour of traveling at what ever speed example lets say it took me 2 minutes Las Venturas to San Fierro at 60 miles an hour it would equal to me driving an equivalent of 120 miles in 2 hours.

So a problem is for instance lets say Liberty City is to scale which would mean its about 300 square miles, assuming you can drive an avg of 100 miles an hour it should take you 3+ real time hours to make one trip around LC. Obviously gamers who but GTA just for for the fun of being bad and not for the realism would not have the patience for real time. Another problem if the map is to a real scale and the time is off then a mission could take all day in the game while essentially all you did was just walk down the block to beat somebody up.

Maybe if you can toggle on and off realism the game could be manageable or lets say when you not doing a mission the games map and time is to scale with the real world, and during the main quest (not side quest) missions the map and time is modified, cause I surely would not want a what was supposed to be a 5 minute fetch a package mission while avoiding or confronting the cops and/or a rival crime family, taking me 5 hours to do.

Anyway what I hope comes out of the game is a more diverse city after a while you pretty much meet every type of npc, ( blink.gif imagine 8 million plus unique npc) also have npc actually do things like have a life if you were able to follow one he or she had a routine like get up go to work come home eat play with the kids on weekend have fun etc. A more lively nightlife in certain areas. I would also love to see npc actually be more responsive and diverse to the player actions like try to have a conversation with npc's like oblivion, or npc's do random stuff to the player like some guy tries to hand me a flyer or something. Better gun and driving mechanics would be a plus. And every building be able to be entered in or break in through doors, and windows.

world of Warcraft does this real time thing which if done well is flawless

i love sitting in SW at 5 p.m. and the game being dusk

and they could do it i hated how the clock would say it took you 4 hours to travel 1 block or to run around a house once

and for the missions that require you to be there at a curtain time like a pay phone that only accepts your mission at 20:00 then they should let you do a sleep type thing where it moves the time 6 in game hours, but i definatly think they should slow down the dam game clock because i hated taking 6 hours changing cloths for the beach and only experiencing 3 minutes of it

yeah that woul dbe good in some ways and how about to add even more realisim......imagine being chased by cops in the middle of a major fire fight and having to stop for....gas how cool woul dthat be. It would annoy so many but it would be hilarious provided you can turn that mode on and off. also more realism have the main character as a soccer mum

Super Pancake
* The protagonist's name is Niko Bellic - an Eastern European immigrant who has come to Liberty City to live the "American Dream." The game is set in Liberty City in 2007, but it is bigger than the Liberty City we saw in GTA III.

* The GTA 4 equivalent of the Statue of Liberty is called the Statue of Happiness, and DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) is known as BOABO (Beneath the Offramp of the Algonquin Bridge Overpass).

* In Grand Theft Auto IV, Rockstar have recreated 4 of the 5 boroughs in New York, as well as part of New Jersey. Broker is the GTA IV equivalent of Brooklyn, Manhattan is now called Algonquin, Queens is now Dukes, the Bronx is Bohan, and New Jersey is Alderney. The map is smaller than San Andreas, but considerably more detailed. No countryside or desert, we are led to believe.

* Pedestrians are far more realistic in GTAIV than in previous GTA games - they sit on benches, smoke cigarettes, read books and generally act like any real pedestrian would in the middle of a street.

* The screenshots in the preview are not representative of the final quality of the graphics, Rockstar insist. The game will only look better as the release draws closer..

* Niko was persuaded to move to Liberty City by his cousin Roman, who claimed to be living a wonderful life there with two beautiful women, fifteen sports cars, and lots of money etc, but he was infact telling a lie in order to hide his own failures. Roman is the only person you know in Liberty City at the beginning of the game, and he becomes one of your major connections at the start. Niko is a tough character whereas Roman is friendly. Roman is heavily in debt and a lot of people are after him - he needs Niko's support. They are constantly bickering.

* The demo (which was played on Xbox 360) begins with Bellic standing inside of the taxi depot, which Roman operates in the borough of Broker in a converted industrial garage. Roman works at a cluttered desk in a shabby environment, and at this point the graphical improvements are extremely evident. Bellic walks to a brownstone house in Broker, where he pushes open the door and pulls out a pistol. The living room however, is not occupied. He then moves onto the kitchen, which he also finds to be empty. He pushes his way through the back door and smashes the window of a red four-door car using his elbow. The broken glass falls onto the street and onto the seat of the car, as Bellic unlocks it from the inside. He hotwires the car and sets off to his next destination. The camera angle behind the car is closer to the vehicle than in previous GTA titles, which enables more detail on the car to be seen. After selecting a radio station, Bellic navigates to a section of the BOABO arriving at a dockside with a terrific view of the city skyline. Pigeons can be heard in the sky, and waves can be heard rustling in the water. Bellic then pulls out his cellphone which has options for Phonebook, Messages, Organizer and Camera on it's LCD screen. He selects Phonebook, and he is then presented with another set of options: City Contact, Docks Friend, and Cab Contact. After a brief conversation he informs the reciever to meet him at the docks.

* As Bellic walks, you can feel the weight behind each step he makes. Variations in the terrain cause realistic changes in the walking animation. The physics have also improved and character movements are more realistic.

* In previous GTA games you were like a slave because you had to constantly take orders from people when doing missions. There is still an element of that in Grand Theft Auto 4, but you can also choose how you want to spend your time, for example "I want to hang out with him and her. I want to hang out with this guy because he always has fun things to do." Call him up and maybe you can hang with him. Maybe he'll answer. You have a lot of choice over what you want to do.

* In GTA 4, Rockstar is giving its players more freedom, more choice, and more sense of control over their destiny - the structure of GTA4's storyline is quite different to it's predecessors as it can be told in a number of different ways. You can talk to people in person, by cell phones, and there are a bunch of other ways of giving the player information. In general it's a different experience, with new ways of interacting with the characters and the game world.

* Rockstar consulted crime experts and ex-policemen when making the game, and they learned that being a criminal is a lot harder these days than it was during the 80s and 90s (for example) and they have tried to reflect this in the game. This means you can expect to see a lot of people getting arrested - the police are a heavy presence in Liberty City.

* There are no planes in GTA IV because there is only one city, and Rockstar want the game to seem realistic. That means there will be no rollerblades, no unicycles, probably no jetpacks and indeed no planes. Rockstar are giving choice and variety which feels right for the character. However there will be motorbikes.

* Rockstar North is approaching the recruitment of voice actors in a different way. This means that we will probably hear less familiar voices in GTA 4, as R* are looking for voices which suit the attitude of the characters, and are not just looking for big names. A similar approach is being done with the soundtrack - Rockstar are looking for great music which works with the 2007 Liberty City.

* After an initial load sequence, the game will never load again. Not even during exterior-interior transitions (and vice versa).

* Both versions of the game (Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3) will likely be identical, but the Xbox 360 version will have exclusive downloadable episodic [sizeable] content. Rockstar have now spent over 3 years developing the game, and Dan Houser compares the leap from GTA III to GTA IV, to the leap from GTA to GTA III.

* GTA IV will have multiplayer, but it's not going to be a massively multiplayer online game, says Dan Houser. They are trying to make something that is interesting, fun, progressive and which goes along nicely with the single-player game.

Far too early to tell but Rockstar has to up the ante this time around. It should feel like a new game and not an expansion pack.

If its only a prettier version of San Andreas with a few more features then it will get crushed. Other developers have bin cloning GTA for awhile now...its only a matter of time until they make a game that is better then it.

Cadetak's GTA4 wishlist:

1. A real aiming, combat, and driving system.
2. Non linear missions.
3. Cooperative Mode
5. Interiors for every building.
6. Way better A.I.
7. More Realistic(but not too realistic).

The problem I have with the GTA series is that I feel like I'm playing with action figures...and not in a real world.
evil_E.T
thats exactly it!!

you should have cars that when you crash them, they might not start up again too...and a hotwiring mini game??
woody82
Personally i think that would be a cool idea. The cars have more realism, but wouldn't thatin theroy take some of the fun away from the game if the cars wouldn't restart?

Imagine a driving misson and your car knacked up...for me it would take soem fun away, it would add more skill which is fine, but in reality many gamers maybe put off by increased realism in that if a car crashes it doesn't restart. Sure if you crash into a wall at 100 mph or 60mph fair enough or a tree. But too much realism would be somewhat too much.
BurnSide
My main problem with the game is that i've always felt like i'm playing with action figures and toy cars in model cities.
I don't want to have that feeling in the games anymore, it's boring. Make senses?

Some terrific info there. I'm looking forward to following a hot pedestrian through the city lol.

I wonder if there will be kids and/or animals finally?
