First, I think you might be in the wrong section, alternative history and ancient mysteries? not sure if this quite qualifies,
Anyways, I've never really understood gothic culture. I mean, the Goths were great warriors. They contributed to the downfall of Rome. Now the idea of a modern day Goth picking up a gun is a laugh. The only thing a goth could or would shoot is himself. Stupid b*t*h*s! Goths are pissants that are too weak to deal with negative emotions, or just want to adopt the culture because they want to be different, accepted, or rebel against their parents. There are lots of possible reasons. If the Goth culture really is dissapearing, I say good riddens. Maybe natural selection if finally doing what its supposed to do.

Not sure if there's any link to ancient german-type tribes.
Goth is a just group like 'rocker', 'raver', 'mod' or whatever, defined by taste in music, fashion and general interests.
They're much maligned and easily stereotyped, but generally more pleasant, intelligent and useful to society than certain other groups.
And I'm not a goth incidentally.

Modern Gothics can be loosely defined as a group with similar tastes in fashion and/or philosophy. The fashion hearkens back to the late 18th century with an emphasis on black and less so, red. The philosophy would be anarchist with a heavy dose of "the world is against me". I would say it started with the "power ballad" bands such as Meatloaf and Pat Benatar and reached its peak with the popularization of the works of Ann Rice. "Gothic" in this sense, movies would be The Rocky Horror Picture Show, (sort of pre-goth), Interview with the Vampire and Blade, (sort of post-goth). Vampirism seems to be a common attractor of many modern Goths. The movement seems to be waning.

Yup. Goth's grew up. As did their hippy parents.
Unfortunately though, some still cling to their dead culture...
I love how people used to say "there's nothing more tragic than an aging hippy"...but believe me, seeing a man in his early 30's, balding, has a 9 to 5 job but still goes out on weekends dressed as a vampire is much more pathetic.

Let's get some goths defending the goth corner here.
I have a friend, who is (well, was) very goth, who swears that the vampirism thing is more of a splintering away from 'proper' goth.
Definitions are always going to be a little vague though, as I don't think there's a single goth manifesto.
I like the almost david attenborourgh study of this elusive creature known as the goth going on here.

I don't know... yeah, maybe it's a bit pathetic... but I don't like thinking like this. Man wants to be a vampire - so what, who cares? Why can't we let him be. Who decides, which culture is dead? Maybe it's even worse, when you cling to the most recent and popular culture... Besides, having 9 to 5 job, balding, a tie, all those things... isn't it pathetic itself, well, in some ways...

The picture that first pops into my mind is dinosaurs. And that would be a part of the Gothic culture, in fact, that would be the Gothic culture. As far as Dragons and what used to be the keepers of the dragons, for sure. The things that are in the imagery and memory of mankind that comes out of stories must have been in existence at one time. It takes awhile for the images to disappear and the mental imprints from the images takes awhile longer. Existence went through a period where those things may have existed and in my mind they did exist. Are werewolves Gothic? What about bats that like to 'suck your blood?' That is a little hard for me to believe! Dracula is too. Where would something like that come from?
'Starving Mishmaninites ravaging the villages of Blitvanonioa went to sucking the blood from their victims,' says reporter Grenitzo Klipsovan.

The historical "Goths" were a Germanic tribe, aka as Vandals. They laid waste to much of the Roman Empire during its decline. They have nothing to do with the historic "Gothic" period of architecture which began during the late medevil period. The Gothic Revival architectural period started in France during the late 1700's and is the period that current "Goths" are identifying with. They are using the fashion styles popular during this period of architectural popularity as a jumping off point for their fashions and lifestyles.

actually i don't think the goth culture is based on music at all, i think music is just a small part of it. i did a little research and i think the goth movement may be inspired by the baroque period, the one after the renaissance. the baroque was all about expressing feelings and being sad all the time, because even if your life was good, you will die some day. it didn't look for perfection, it wanted to appeal the senses instead of searching for logic or reason like the renaissance. i think that this movement of sadness and expression may have influenced the gothic movement, that's just my opinion

but i am not stereotypical,, i dont pray to satan,, im not all dark and doom and gloom,, meh i dunno,, i think there is no such thing as a label,, more just individualism.
like i say on my profile,, i get the piercings,, the tats,, listen to the music and dress like i do cos i like it,, not to follow a subculture

Mar 27 2007, 03:31 AM
The goth subculture (note. the actual goth subculture, not the mall metal kiddies who think hot topic makes them goth) was originally based within a musical movement. The musical movement was a branch off of the punk of the time and actually originated with the realease of the song "Bela Lugosis Dead" by a band called Bauhaus.
Sadly enough the majority of people these days who refer to themselves as "goth" probably don't even know the most base history of what they claim.
Anywho, just my two cents. And, if for some reason its relevant, I'm in no way a goth
Savas mon de

Goth is not what musical taste you like but how you feel about yourself its more of a state of mind it not how you dress yourself and its not about wrist slitting at all you may have that confused with things such as Fantasy gothism
Fantasy gothism: belives they are a type of creature which they intertwine with thier life
arise these myths of what you think and have been told and see yourself with your own eyes not the eyes of a stereotype
sames said about other subcultures
if you belive the myths you would be a fool to think that

sisters of mercy rock...they are an awesome band....type o negative too are great....many others too
like the music, find the 'philosophy' that people attach to it a bit straining tho....i like horror films too but dont want to dress as a vampire....
i remember asking a goth whilst out on the lash one night why she and her friends dressed so....and would have accepted many answers and left it at that.
but she said it was because she wanted to demonstrate her individualism.....so why paint her face the same, and dress the same as every other goth? what's so individualistic about that?
I think that people like to wear masks. it allows them to become other than what they are. like tribal folk dancing around a fire....
its fun, i presume... worn a few masks myself at fancy dress occasions...but to wear it so much that you identify yourself as the mask and not the person within has to be a bit psychologically dodgy.
no offence.....
Some of the gothic music is most innovative and evocative....emotion seems to play a great part in it.
all things in moderation i suppose. Happy light music is good for the soul.

I'm ranting now. Every time I see a discussion about goths I have to clear up the stereotypes.
There really is no solid way to define the gothic lifestyle. Most goths and even emos I know are actually some of the happiest and talkative people I know. I know one goth guy who's 6'6", 16 years old, openly gay, and wears 7" high platform boots and the preppy girls always keep hitting on him. I know an emo chick that sounds like she's on crack, wears preppy jackets and is probably going to be the most devoted anti-drug advocate on the face of the Earth. None of them cut and they usually even like rap. It just makes me mad to see people call them suicidal and hateful of preppy people, because there isn't the typical rift between these two groups of kids in my town. Where I live, preps are the kids that appear to be suicidal. Strange, huh?

I’m reading these quotes and it sounds to me like a bunch of individuals using this website as a sounding-board for their hostility. On the point you have been arguing, please stop confusing “life-styles,” & “Fads,” with culture. “Goth,” “New-Wave,” “Hippie,” Yippee,” “Preppy,” “Yuppie,” and a whole plethora of others throughout the travail of ages are not “cultures.” They are lifestyles and fads. “Culture” is a much larger and much more complex concept. Can we please keep things in the context of this website?

Thank you for proving my point. The concept and context of your question is well within the context of this website and most worthy of discussion. Culture, lifestyle, fads etcetera are very much a part of the human’s ability to interpret their world and the conclusions drawn there from. The point that you have proven so eloquently is that it appears that many are not using this (and other websites) for their stated purpose. They are simply being used as sites in which someone with very low self esteem can attempt to feel superior and ergo overly inflate their ego by insulting absolute strangers with complete anonymity. Insults and innuendoes do not fall into the realm of scientific discussion. But, your attitude and response does reflect perfectly the afore mentioned hypothesis I’m using in the Sociological Research Article I have been asked to write. Thank you for your willing cooperation as a research subject. When quoted, do you prefer “astaroth?” Again, thank you for your support and assistance.

I've always assumed that the term "goth" refers to the Victorian Gothic movement. Think Dracula (published 1897) and Frankenstein (published 1831- by the wife of the poet Percy Shelley!). Think rebellion against the industrial revolution, with a focus on the weirdness of the human subconscious mind.
Goths are a rebellion against the computerization of society ( too bad geek-a-tization isn't a word). It's the not bright-eyed-bushy-tailed response to 'Computer Training Dot Com' commercials. It is no coincidence that the goth movement arose simultaneously with the yuppie movement.
Every time period has a counter-culture with the same function as the Goths. Beetnicks in the 50's, hippies in the 60's, etc., and we should be glad these folks exist. These are the people who keep us from degenerating into a society of human robots.
I have to add- I love the way they dress.

Goth-disinterested in the average, preferring to explore the darker side of everything. constantly testing boundaries and discovering how to overcome them. Sometimes depressed but not usually with themselves, usually it is society they are so disappointed in. Appreciates things outside the norm. Mostly loners however have attracted "followers." In any case sometimes it is. These are a beauty is on the inside kind of people and are FANTASTIC conversationalists. The appreciation for the 'dark side" is off putting to some people though.
