Cop allegedly beats up female bartender for cutting him off

Associated Press
Mar. 21, 2007 03:25 PM
CHICAGO - An off-duty police officer in street clothes was caught on video by a bar surveillance camera beating up a female bartender half his size after she cut off his drinks, authorities said.

Anthony Abbate, a 12-year veteran of the Chicago force, was charged with aggravated battery and placed on leave pending an internal investigation in the attack Feb. 19 as several bystanders watched, department spokeswoman Monique Bond said Wednesday.

The video from Jessie's Short Stop Inn Tavern, shown on television around the nation, shows the 250-pound Abbate shouting at the 115-pound bartender, then walking behind the bar and punching, kicking and throwing her to the ground.

The woman suffered bruises to her head, neck, back and lower body. Her attorney, Terry Ekl, did not immediately return a call Wednesday. He told WFLD-TV that the attack began after the bartender refused to serve Abbate.

Abbate, 38, was arrested Tuesday night at his home. Bond said authorities were notified of the incident on Feb. 21 but were unable to locate Abbate until mid-March.

He was held on $70,000 bond Wednesday. Abbate's lawyer, William Fahey, did not immediately return a call for comment.

NO.........you know the police honour, if the others jumped in kicking him down those people would be caught by the officers, ie his mates and fellow officers, they would be kicked in and set up for a drug offences.

hope he gets removed from the force!

I saw the video tape. How rude. I hope she's going to be ok.

He has been striped of his badge & gun. I believe. I'm not sure he's got fired.

I saw the video! MY GOD!!! That cop is HUGE compared to the woman! And all she was doing was her job! I hope he looses his job, gun & badge! Whatta creep! (I'd say worse, but this is a family forum & it would be deleted)

I also find this to be HIGHLY SUSPICIOUS!

Source His lawyer even said he was in substance abuse treatment program. So in other words, he was in HIDING!!! Whatta crock!

Also did the people in the bar know he was a cop, so they may have feared calling 911? Course if I were in there, I would have slipped out & called 911. I also don't buy that he

had never been disciplined since joining the police department in 1994.
He just never got caught. He's got major issues with alcohol & anger, not a good combination if you have a badge & gun!!!

I also found these interesting tidbits in another articles about the case:
QUOTE
Prosecutors reportedly were looking into whether other police officers threatened to arrest the victim and bar owner on trumped-up charges if they didn't drop the case.
Attack Upgraded to Felony hmm.gif

QUOTE
Police arrived too late after the beating to arrest the officer. (CONVENIENT!!!)

What makes this case sickening is that after the attack, someone offered the victim money to be quiet, according to news reports.

“Another individual came in moments after the attack and attempted to offer the victim money in order for her not to prosecute the defendant,” Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney David Navarro said in court.

Even worse, the Chicago Tribune says that police officers threatened to arrest the victim if she snitched.

Prosecutors are looking into whether multiple police officers threatened to arrest the victim and bar owner on trumped-up charges if they didn’t drop the case, sources said.

To serve & protect? Protect from who? It was a cop beating up a small woman!! I'll leave you with this:

QUOTE
According to court records, Abbate did not have a clean record. He was arrested for DUI in 1992 and named in a federal lawsuit for beating a man under arrest in 1999. The man later died.
Truth about woman-beating cop.

edit: typos. sorry.
Kalien
Because he is a cop he should get harsher punishment, that was just horrible.

Authorities are investigating claims that six off-duty Chicago police officers were captured on video assaulting four men in a bar, the second report of police involved in an assault to surface in a week.

Adam Mastrucci, Scott Lowrance and brothers Aaron and Barry Gilfand were playing pool at the Jefferson Tap and Grille on December 15 when the off-duty officers attacked them, their attorney Steven Fine said.

Patrol officers responded to a 911 call, but left after speaking to one of the off-duty officers, Fine said. One of the four men required reconstructive surgery for a broken nose and another had broken ribs, Fine said.

Lawyers did not say what may have prompted the alleged incident.

"I don't think this is a case where the police department can say they don't know who they're looking for," he said.

Security cameras inside and outside the bar captured the incident, said Sally Saltzberg, another attorney for the men.

Police and the Cook County state's attorney's office are looking into the claim, said police spokeswoman Monique Bond, who declined to discuss details. No charges have been filed in the case, a department spokesman said Sunday.

Saltzberg filed a petition February 27 in Cook County Circuit Court seeking the officers' names, a precursor to a lawsuit. The men have not formally filed suit. The petition is scheduled to appear before a Cook County judge on April 2, Saltzberg said.

The latest claims follow accusations that an off-duty police officer beat a female bartender who reportedly refused to serve him drinks. A bar surveillance camera also recorded that incident, officials said

Man, poor girl. She's lucky he didn't have a gun on him. I hope he gets kicked off the force. I'm sure he'll enjoy a nice stay in the slammer as well as never being a cop again.
