Ok, I'll respond to this rofl.gif I do like microbeer! I don't home brew because I don't have any room or time to do it, but there is a homebrewing supply shop 3 blocks from my house.

My favorite micros?

Arrogant Ba$tard (I didn't want it to get language filtered haha)
Duwammish Stout (I think this is Duwammish Brewing in Seattle)
Chinook (made by Red Hook, but only seasonally in small quantities, it's a copper ale)
Mac N Jacks African Amber (Redmond Brewing Company in Redmond WA)
Moose Drool Nut Brown Ale (Sky Brewing in Bozeman Montana)

Yea! Good beer! I don't really drink, but I like a good kick ya in the hiney brewski once in a great while.

I'm always interested in good microbeers because years ago I started a tradition of finding some of the most unusual stouts, dark ales, and nut browns for my bf's brother (although I like coppers, ambers and some IPA's). It's become something of a game. He and I like the same beers, but I just don't drink that often. He does a little more than I do, but we think it's fun to find that odd great tasting microbrew for each other.

I live just outside of Seattle, a stones throw from Red Hook Brewing (which is owned by Anheiser Busch now I think sad.gif ) and we have a lot of really great small brewing companies up here.

Seattle is apparently all about its beverages.... we all seem to be fantics of great beer, small local wines, and of course... gourmet coffee. haha A lot of small soda makers are starting to pop up too like Jones Soda. One day Seattle will no longer be known as the Jet City, but as the Gourmet Beverage Captial of the WORLD. haha

Oh ya, I've had a lot of Rogue, they're out of Portland Ore.

We have a Rogue Brewery Pub not too far from me. It's fun, and it is good beer.

Look at Whole Foods for some of the great Washington and Oregon beers, we pump a lot of great stuff out of this area. original.gif

Thats where we go to get most of our beed, Whole Foods haha.
Its just Louisiana has some wierd laws, Shannon will be able to explain more, so we can't get a lot of beers here, it has something to do with the alchohol percentage.

My English teacher said the best beer to get is from a micro-brewery.

So what is a micro brewery? A small business or a family who makes their own beer?
AtlantisRises
I brew my own beer. I generally have 3 or 4 brews g oing timed so that I am bottling one as I am Barrelling the other with at least one or two in the fridge at any time. I also recentally bought a kit to Keg it myself and as such now have to beer taps at home (Heaven)

I generally do 4 different types of beer. A good Coopers or Southwark Stout. A Tooheys Dark Ale. A Coopers Pale Ale. And a Matilda Bay Pilsener.

They are all 4 quite fine beers though the Pilsener is a cut above the rest indeed.

A suggestion is that when you wish to make a really professional tasting beer is that when you choose your beer, such as a Pale Ale to pour a stubbie of the chosen beer into the Barrel when you first start the beer. It makes it far creamier and produces what in my opinion is a far more proffesional finish. Plus it seems to up the alcohol content a bit.

Another suggestion is to use Honey as the primer rather then Suger. This gives the beer a marvelous sweet taste and also ups the Alcohol content a LOT. However it should be a good honey such as Heather or Salvation Jane or the beer might end up a little sour.

Anyhow great thread and I hope to see other brewers with some ideas.

Shannon (AS.Rudeboy) Just started brewing not too long ago, I think he just finished his second batch the other day. It was an English Bitter I believe.
Anyhow, Thats cool about the Keg thing, Shannon did a bunch of research on that, We have a kegerator? ( I'm not sure if thats what its called) But we have Guinness on tap right now, and Shannon has been looking to see if he can get a MicroBrew Keg, but those are hard to find.

AtlantisRises
Cool. It is good fun indeed. I got my Keg Kit at a speciality Brew shop. I looked for a while in "mens" stores and stuff but while you can get basic beer stuff you need to go to a specialist store for the really good equipment.

I would love to have Guinness on tap, that would be awesome.

Good luck with your brew and if you want any advice I'd be more then happy to help. As the whole world knows "if you want to learn about beer, ask an Aussie." wink2.gif

Yes, they are typically small breweries that specialize in unique beers. They're like "gourmet" beers.

Some beers are considered "Micro" because they started small but now they're HUGE but still offer a variety of unique styles of beer. For example, most people would consider Red Hook Beer to be "micro" and indeed they started out very very small down the street from my house, but have since been bought out by Anheiser Busch and in most places in the USA you can find Red Hook ESB or IPA on tap. I dont consider them to be "micro" anymore, but a lot would put them in that category.

Most regular beers like Bud, or Miller or even imports like Heinekin or Lowenbrau are pilsners and lagers. Most micro breweries don't even make pilsner or lager. Most micros are heavy IPA's, Heffeweisens, Coppers, Ambers, Reds, Nut Stouts, Stouts.... very very different from lager and pilsner which are typically pale yellow and light.

One of the funniest micro beer slogans I've ever seen is on the glasses that Arogant Ba$tard distributed to bars as a promotional... it says on the side: "Only Wussies Drink Yellow Fizzy Beer" rofl.gif

The other funny lable I've seen was not on beer, and not in the USA. In the USA, Mikes Hard Lemonaide is a "malted beverage" meaning it has a barley/beer base. In Canada it's not malted, it's made with Vodka. The bottle labels in Canada actually say: "Mikes Hard Lemonaide an EXCELLENT source of Vodka" rofl.gif that always cracked me up.
