SALAMONIA, IN -- At least the awful stench gives you a little warning of what you are about to see. After all, nothing that smells that bad can look very good.

Animal carcasses -- by one count more than 250 of them -- have been scattered along a steep bank that leads down to a small creek along Spooky Hollow Road between Jay County roads 600-S and 700-S.

Some of the carcasses appear to be in garbage bags, and others are just scattered around the area. There's the occasional body part here and there, a skull or two rolled up against the base of a tree and other rubbish like tires and broken glass dumped there as well...

...Oddly enough, some of the carcasses had been skinned, including dogs, cats, raccoons and coyotes among others. But a couple of calf carcasses didn't appear to have been molested in any way.

Conservation officer Ford is leading the investigation. He could not be reached for comment Monday, but others say the investigation has led toward Mercer County, just across the state line in Ohio, because numerous pets have been reported missing there.

Very odd. What's even stranger is that I was born in Jay Co....in Portland, but haven't been back in years.

I believe the most likely reason is what was also posted at the site:

"Due to the variety of different animals including I hear calves, I think they were dumped by someone who has a contract to pick up dead animals at farms, shelters, vets, the highway department, etc. He was probably paid to cremate them but saved a buck by doing what he did. The fact that some animals were skinned was probably to sell their fur. Another dollar made. Dogs that have been put down and tested for rabies have their heads severed and sent to a lab for testing. I could be wrong but I think this is where the animals came from. I also read in your paper that a lot of pets are missing. People called Bunchers steal pets and sell them to Class B Kennels. They in turn sell them to labs that experiment on animals. It's a common practice. Those dealers is the first place I'd look for missing pets. I'm an animal rights activist and I have do deal with this kind of thing every day. Good luck. This guy shouldn't be hard to find if I'm right. There isn't a whole lot of people in this gruesome business"

I personally believe if the animals had been used for ritualistic purposes, the organs would've been removed.

I think yours is the most resonable theory so far. It does explain much. I guess were just going to have to wait and see what develops in this story.

Good Journey.

I have to agree with Isis on this one.

No way the scary satanist people (that was sarcastic) had a big jamoboree and sacrificed 250 different animals all at once.

I agree, they probably would have removed their external organs.

I agree with Isis 2200 on this completely. I am come across numerous animal dumps in the Pine Barrens and this definately sounds like a carcass disposal contractor who has gotten greedy. The calfs were probably regected by their mothers and died from lack of colostrum. As for the skinned wildlife and dogs pelts bring big money now. The calfs were not molested because their skin was too thin to be of any use for leather.
I once came across a butcher shop's illegal dump and a Burlington County Times writer insisted it was Satanists. Another dump I came across was of "bait dogs" (small dogs kidnapped for use to train fighting dogs) from a illegal dog fighting ring out of Atlantic City. I have a teacup poodle and a Lhasa Apso (my armpit warmers when I sleep) that I rescued when we finally nailed the ring. People are heartless.

I think Isis is right.... either that or it was PETA... ya, those animal rights weirdo's.

PETA trial opens in animal deaths

They were popped in North Carolina for illegally dumping hundreds of animals they euthanized. no.gif
ladygrim
Thats kinda gross i personally wouldn't like to stumble across that .. what makes it more odd is the fact that cats and dogs were among the ones to have been skinned
