This can happen when you are out of the body one minute and then suddenly pulled back in very quickly (which was probably caused by your mum waking you up), it is sometimes where your astral body is not in complete alignment with your physical. Falling back to sleep should help it re-align.

one time in the middle of the night I jumped out of bed and ran to the door, and only when I was in the doorway, I stopped and thought "why am I doing this?" and there was no reason at all, so I came back to sleep.
it was weird

Im pretty disoriented every morning... damn alarm clock.

When I retire one day, the first thing I am going to do is to set the alarm for 3.30am and when it shrills at appointed time, I am gonna chuck the thing right out into the street!!! Then I can go back to bed and lay in until 5pm!!

this posting was made by someone on shift work who often has to rise out of her pit at 3am!

I do that alot one time I woke up and I thought my name was something else. Its only when I wake up to early.

I wake up disoriented all the time. Mostly I trip over stuff and when I leave my t.v on overnight I argue with it.

I am not a morning person.

couple weeks ago I got home from work about an hour before my wife and I dozed off on the couch(12hr workday)and woke up when she was opening the door, I was completly disorientated didnt know if it was morning or night where the hell I was it lasted for a few seconds then I was fully awake I guess.definetly a messed up experience

Maybe your room is to hot? People tend to get confused & disorientated if it is. Try to cool it down when you sleep.

lol. I woke up around 2 am last week from a nightmare where there was a giant spider in the bed. I woke up and was stomping and jumping on the bed to try to kill it all the while screaming David! David kill it. Problem is my boyfriends name is Martin. unsure.gif blush.gif rofl.gif

This usually happens to me if I fall asleep in the evening and wake up a few hours later. In one particular instance where I was deathly tired I feel asleep at around 5 PM, and woke up at 7 PM. My blinds were closed, and I figured I had just slept the night with my clothes on, so I started going through my morning routines thinking it was 7 AM. Changed, brushed my teeth, even showered...it was only when I turned on the TV to catch the news that I realized something was terribly wrong. laugh.gif

I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that you were astral projecting. Your mind just gets confused when it's forced to sleep at an unusual time. Also you may have been in the REM period of sleep (rapid eye movement). If you were woken up out of this state it would definitely be disorienting because ordinarily your brain "winds down" after REM and shortly before you wake up.

When someone wakes me up unexpectedly I am very confused. I will say some of most off the wall things, lol My kids think it is hillarious, lol Not saying that all occurences for everyone are the same, but look to the obvious before deciding on something like AP.

Sounds like you woke up during REM. That can literally affect you all day long.

That was so funny! did you really? Honestly, do this alot, get disoriented when i am awoken, it's quite common. One day I woke up, and insisted my hubby had moved my quilt I was making and he wouldn't tell me where it was. Thing was, I wasn't making any quilt. He told me to go back to bed. It usually happens when I am really tired or awoken suddenly. I happen to sleep at different places sometimes, due to work, I work an occasional sleep shift, and I have three homes I work in. I also sleep on my couch alot. I often wake up in places thinking I am somewhere else. It's kinda freaky for the first moment when i open my eyes and I am not where I thought I was.

Were you drunk the previous night?

i assume that was directed at me, no im sure i wasnt i dont drink alcohol (uless on special occasions) and i havnt anything alcoholic to drink in well over a month, not on any medication either at the momemnt.

so is this diorientation occuring because we wake up or are woken up during r.e.m?
ShadowLady
The other night I was dreaming that I was lying in bed, but it was facing a different direction. This showdy figure came in and held a shot gun up to my head. I woke up really fast and was disoriented. I thought I was in bed facing a totally different direction, but I wasn't. It was weird, like I was wathching from outside my body as this 'shadow' came into the room.

And you got this from where? waking up in the middle of R.E.M sleep doesn't make you disoriented, unless it's one of those dreams that are so real that when you wake up you ask yourself what am I doing here?

Well, maybe it was one of those dreams. unsure.gif original.gif

I got up and tried to climb out of a second story window in my sleep once. Luckily I woke up and didn't do it.
Another time I was dreaming that I was being chased by a shark, and sprang out of bed at a full run, only to hit the washing machine and do a head over heals type thing. I was wedged in between the washer and dryer, upside down, very disoriented.

At other times I just sit up in the darkness, freeked out, not having any idea where I am. I thought I was being crushed by a garbage truck in a dumpster one night and woke up screaming. I could go on and on, so either it's a natural occurance, or I'm nuts. w00t.gif

Waking up disoriented and confused has nothing to do any paranormal phenomena, and is simply the result of you being awoken during one of the stages of sleep; I will explain not just throw out my opinion.

Although sleep may seem like a steady state, it actually consists of several stages that cycle(meaning they repeat) throughout the night. There are 5 stages of sleep that occur in each cycle; each complete cycle takes approximately 90 to 100 minutes to complete, times may differ slightly depending on age. Each stage of a cycle is characterized by unique brain waves present at the time that are based on amplitdes and frequencies.

Some groups combine stages 3 and 4 because they differ only in the percantage of certain waves occuring

Here is a quick overview of the different waves and stages of wakefullness
Awake
Waking - Beta Waves
Meditation - Alpha Waves

Sleep
Stage 1 - Theta waves
Stage 2 - Theta waves + K - complexes + sleep spindles (the latter of the two deal with the tension and relaxation of muscles during this stage of sleep)
Stage 3 - Delta waves
Stage 4 - Delta waves
REM - waves similar to that of wakefullness this is due to REM being the stage of sleep in whcih dreams occur)

Just as each stage of sleep has a certain companion brain wave, there are also specific charaterisitics that can be associated with the body during each stage of sleep.

Stage 1 - Breathing slows and regulate, period of drowsiness, periods of drifint in and out of sleep, a person may experience the feeling of falling (hence the term falling alseep)during this stage of sleep
Stage 2 - Period of light sleep, body temperature and heart rate decresses as the body prepares to enter into deep sleep, but a person can easilt be awaken by sounds
Stage 3 and Stage 4 -Delta sleep the point when our brain waves are least like waking;consequently, it is most difficult stage in which to wake sleepers. If a person is awakened from deep sleep he/she will probably be groggy, confused, or disoriented often experiencing "sleep inertia" or "sleep drunkenness," which is the inunability to function normally for quite some time.
REM Stage - Paralysis of limbs, darting of eyes, breathing becomes more rapid and shallow. If awakened during REM most people tend to remember their dreams.

While angry crustacean was on the right path...he/she simply got the stage of sleep wrong.
You were awaken during Stage 4 of the sleep cycle, hence your disorientation.
