Hiya...saw one of these in the garden for the first time ever today...aren't they rare in Britain and especially this early?
Samael
Technically, hummingbird hawkmoths are not native to Britain at all. I saw some in Germany a couple of years ago.

Then, slightly fewer years ago, I was in the garden and I realised that there was a hummingbird hawk moth drinking nectar out of the roses. I was gobsmacked. But they're becoming increasingly common in Blighty. It's most likely a by-product of 'global warming.'

EDIT: Rank up. Fwee.

I must admit, I had never heard of these. I looked them up, and for all the others that have no idea what they look like, here's a picture.
