In the 1970's my Aunt used to be the Keeper of the Key at Tamworth castle in England - she lived in the lodge in the grounds of the castle and if the alarms went off in the middle of the night or whenever, it was her job to let the emergency services in and so forth. Being young, we thought this was really cool and would stay with her often. It is a very haunted castle and has a reputation of being so. The vibe as a child was that this place was "different" though I couldn't put my finger on it (though having a real cannon behind the wardrobe is a bit odd!). Anyway, my sister and I would sleep in the front bedroom that overlooked the statue and castle and there was a stained glass window in the bedroom onto the stairway.

My older sister, who is as straight as they come when it comes to be honest, said that as a child she saw a lit candle being carried up the stairs, but no one was there. She swears this is the truth, and I truly believe her. Whether it was the over active imagination of a child, who can say, I believe that she is being honest when she says this is what she saw.

Hmmmm don't think i've ever been to Tamworth castle.. I've been to Warwick castle when i was in high school though but it didn't seem out of the norm' to me original.gif Maybe i should go down and check that castle out some time after i find out how far it is from Newcastle.

Any way in regards to your story it sounds interesting.. I don't suppose you know roughly what time this was going on do you, Sarah? Does your mum know anything about it or has she herself seen this or anything else in relation to the castle?
Castles can be very haunted places due to the magnitude of history behind them.. Was there anybody else that had any reason to be walking around it such as a watchmen or something?

I was at Tamworth castle only a few months ago, an old friend of my g/f was getting married in the town and we took the opportunity to have a look around. Nice place and was very interesting despite most of the exhibits being removed or wrapped up whilst they redid a few floors or something.
I had a go at taking a few photos on my mobile in the hope that something might be caught, but we couldn't see a single ghost or apparition or anything that could be mistaken for one, and my camera didnt pick anything up either. Didnt feel particuarly spooky either, and I can usualy sense something odd is around (bit odd that sense, its a bit like feeling Im being watched, and I reckon its my head trying to tell me theres something about. It happens in areas where ghosts are known to be, but not all the time, like when a visiting spirit is away. Also happens on occasions when ghosts arent known to be around, and seems to indicate one is...but I might be wrong! its a bit hard to tell. My family though does have an odd psychic history).
Good job really, if there had been even a slight hint of a ghost there my G/f would have run a mile!

My Aunt lived there when I was about 6 or 7 and my sister is 5 years older than me. It is a spooky place to stay though I never witnessed anything myself, I did feel odd there - but you would when you're little and there's talk of a castle you're staying in being haunted! There's a haunted bedroom, haunted staircase and haunted battlements at the castle - so it's no secret that this place has ghosts. However, I've just spoken to my mum and she said that nothing specific happened to her or my Aunty in the years that she spent there - it was just this incident with my sister.

Warwick Castle was voted Britains best castle - it's great there, Tamworth is really small in comparison. No, it was a private house, well the Lodge of the castle that my Aunt lived in that we were staying, there was no way it could have been anyone other than family there - and no one was going up those stairs with a candle that night, she said she could clearly see that there was no one holding it and it was floating up the stairs, it happened at night when she was in bed - she could have dreamed it, she said it was through the stain glass so her perception may have been altered, who knows, but she's sincere in her belief. No one else had any experiences there though.

Well stained glass can be hard to see through in regards to seeing details.. How far away was the castle from the lodge?

Isn't Tamworth where those two piggies are from that escaped from the slaughter house? laugh.gif

Yes it is.

Also yes the stained glass could have made it more tricky to see, but she swears she saw it clearly. We'll never know, but I think she's sincere in what she BELIEVES she saw.

Tamworth Castle is sited in the town centre Pleasure Grounds overlooking the confluence of the rivers Tame and Anker. The Normans built the original motte and bailey castle some time between 1070 - 1080. In the 1180's a polygonal shell keep was built upon the motte.

The castle has had many owners and was altered many times over the centuries. The oldest surviving section within the Shell-Keep, is the north wing with its 13th century arched doorway, and there are examples of different periods of building through to the late 18th century. The most impressive room is the Great Hall with its oak timbered roof that dates from the mid 15th century.

The castle contains a museum that recreates how parts of the castle would have been used during different periods of its history. The castle is reputed to be haunted and one room even has a re-enactment of a haunting

I've never done this before so I hope these two photos have uploaded. The old photo one is of my mum and me back in the 70's when we used to stay at the castle, it is of us in front of the lodge where my Aunt lived, there is a new kitchen extension to the right and the lodge proper to the left. The second picture is of my sister and my sons in front of the lodge when we went back to have a visit a couple of years ago. The upstairs window on the right was where our bedroom was and in this bedroom there was another window out on the the stairs, which is where she saw the ghost.

By the way, the lady in the photo is the person who saw the ghost as a child.

Thanks for the info before on the castle, it great reading it and the great photo too.

The vibe was that there were ghosts there or at least of feeling scared - I'm not sensitive and don't see/hear ghosts, so I think it was probably being so young and a vivid imagination. My sister would have been 12 at the time.
