Phobia List.Comprehensive Phobia listWhen i was a kid i had Dendrophobia - The fear of trees. As well i had a dreadful fear of knives and sharp objects as a kid. I have yet to discover the name of that fear. I no longer have these fears but i wonder why i had them. I have never had a bad experience with a tree or a knife so why? A lot of people have bizzare phobias that are unexplainable such as a fear of honey or a fear of swing sets and stuff like that. There is an association of phobias to OCD Obsessive Compulsive Disorder but it hasn't been explained succesfully yet. I have read some interesting stories
Strange Brains And Geniuses that tell of peoples extremely odd fears and behaviors relating to phobias. If you have a phobia to share i would like you to share it. Maybe an explanation can be found.

claustrophobia - fear of enclosed spaces, this one has come and gone almost all of my life, sometimes I have it bad, others I don't.
agoraphobia - fear of crowds, I'm an introvert, but I think this is actually just a different version of the claustrophobia because sometimes the coolest place to lose myself in is the biggest crowd I can find and others I can't stand to have more than a few people around me.

I think perhaps it started from childhood when I had to get those allergies test. If you've never had one it's traumatic for a kid lol. The doctor labels off 26 areas on your back (they do it on the arm now) and with 26 different needles they stick you with some type of substance to see if you are allergic to it. I could have the procedure wrong though, but I am well aware of all the needles lol.
Anyway, I was okay until the first needle and how bad it hurt, so naturally I try and hide under the doctors table and it was a struggle getting me out from under there

. Since then i've always been afraid of doctors and needles.

Thanks for your explanation EmpressStar. I wonder why this is the first i ever heard of an alergy test like that. They must only do the test on people suspected of having alergies.

iamson, im like you, clausriphobic, i hate small spaces, especially elevators. I always wont go into a room if there isnt an alternate escape such as a window, or wont shut the door. I'm not sure why but i think it happened when we were playing hid and seek as a child and i got stuck under the bed and couldnt breathe.... I also hate having someone or something on my chest, coz i begin to hyperventilate. even thinking of small spaces gets my chest hurting and feeling funny.
But, did you know, there are phobias for: marshmellows, and getting peanut butter stuck on the top of your mouth- cant remeber the names, but ill see if i can find them!

Acrophobia - I don't know how or when it started because when I was a kid I wasn't afraid of heights at all. I used to love roller coasters and all the other rides but now I can't even watch a movie with someone standing on a high cliff or I start to freak out. I really can't pinpoint where it might have all began, it's weird.
Also, belly button piercings make me all wiggly at the knees, but I'm not really afraid of them.

Thats the mystery here. Why? Fascinating. It's known that steps can be taken to abolish these fears by trained professionals but that still doesn't explain the origins of the phobias.

Hmm, when i go into an old big building namely a church or cathedral, my breathing quickens and i feel a little panicky/dizzy when i look at the ceiling. I sometimes visualise it caving in. However i comfort myself with the fact that its just a thought and the building has been standing for many years. With this rationalle i still dont understand where my immediate response and discomfort comes from. I do remember however, having this feeling more extreme than any other time when i was at a christmas church service at the age of 5. I was a little low in blood sugar (diabetic) and every time i looked up the ceiling kept falling in then falling in over and over again. Perhaps this experience conditioned me to react in this way when i go into tall buildings now.
The funny thing is that i have actually had in recent years two ceilings fall on my head, in low ceilinged buildings not high. Both times i was highly ammused by the experience, infact the second time was mad, the whole ceiling fell down except the space around my body, HA HAAAAA an opposite version of telekenetics perhaps?

Another one that i cant explain, dont even know if its a phobia but at times when i've been messing with friends theres been the odd occasion when one might jokingly if chopping something point the knife at me in an
obviously joking way but sheer panic just rushes through my system, nervous laughter followed by me hollering for them to put it away/ put it down and they look a little surprised by my extreme reaction ...only when they point it at me though, its not the presence of the knife itself.
NICE ONE!!!

I like the thought of going to a church or a semetary at night. Im into the macabre and the such. Not for a service but when the church is empty and the only people there are you and the ghosts. And maybe a priest lurking around somewhere hiding.
But maybe at night theres a backwords feeling towords the essence of the church. Devine during the day and evil at night. I don't think it really gets evil at night but it's just the feeling some people get.

Oh boy, ya, I had those tests when I was five--a total of 52 in the back, 18 on each arm and 18 in each leg--followed by 11 years of allergy shots every other day. I actually have no fear of needles, but I DO NOT like to have other people stick me with them. When I go to the doctor now, I draw my own blood samples and give myself my own injections under the watch of the doctor or nurse. I could easily see how the allergy testing process would cause someone to fear needles and doctors, it's VERY unpleasant--I still remember my mother and 3 nurses pinning me down while they stabbled me like a pin cushion. (actually, they aren't really shots per se, they're scratching the skin with a needle, the tests are actually called "Allergen Scratch Tests")
My only read fear is called
Apiphobia -- a fear of bees. I am allergic to bee stings, and just seeing one makes me hyperventilate, makes my heart race, causes me to squeal like a little girl, occasionally you can find me running around like a lunatic trying to get away from one. Just thinking about bees makes me queasy.
At times in my life, I've suffered from Claustrophobia as well, but that seems to come and go. I'm not sure why it happens, but I suspect it migth come from when I was a kid and my uncle was playing and zipped me up inside a mummy sleeping bag and refused to let me out. *shrug*

Birds are a super common phobia actually. I love birds and used to raise parrots. I worked with a gal who was terrified of them. We actually broke her of her phobia. I selected my most gentle parrot from my aviary and we started by having her look at him through the window of my car, then I brought him into my office and she looked at him through the window there. After about a week of conditioning her to him, she finally got the nerve up to hold him. She did start to totally panic, but my bird buddy LOVED blonde women (she was very blonde) and he just leaned into her arm and started cooing "pretty lady, pretty lady, hush hush baby" ... she actually never had a problem after that, and in-fact, started to ask me to bring him to work more often.
I have another friend who hates what he calls "Yard bird" Turkeys, chickens, squab, partridges, peacocks... he can't look at them either. He says he's not afraid of them (he's a macho man at 6'6" 255lbs), he just hates them, he can't even eat chicken or turkey in any shape or form.

I don't really have any phobias which cripple me in fear. With that said, I do have certain unrational fears.
Glossophobia — fear of speaking in public or of trying to speak
Arachnophobia — fear of arachnids, usually specific to spiders.
Acrophobia, Altophobia — fear of heights.
Aquaphobia, Hydrophobia — fear of water, but for me only as it pertains to deep dark water when swimming or drowning

Arachnophobia and fear of heights.
Last year, one night I happened to discover a spider on the wall above my bed. I immediately sprung into action, trying to get the bugger with my vacuum cleaner. Alas, I screwed up and the eight legged freak fell to the floor. Unfortunately (for me that is) I couldn't find it again. For an hour or so I even pondered the idea of staying up until it resurfaced again. However, I eventually gave up that idea and crashed on my couch instead lol. The following night, thanks to my cat, I saw there was something that caught his attention, making me think... could that really be? Yes, it could! Well, since it failed the night before with the "old vacuum cleaner ploy", to paraphrase Chiefinspector Closeau, I decided to go for "the old rolled up newspaper ploy" instead. *SMACK!* Yes, this time I got the little creep! And, yes, I really don't like them, BIG time!

I have to admit that I'm really scared of insects and other small animals.

There isn't a word for this but i am deathly afraid of woolly mammoths. I can't see a picture of them and i won't even go to a museum to see there bones.......even thinking about them creeps me out. I did a past life test and it said that i was a male that live in Alaska around the 1500's or so. But it didn't say how i died so im wondering if thats why im scared of them b/c they killed me in my past life.

Not sure if: Claustrophobia- Fear of confined spaces -is really what my phobia is. I can't stand to be in sucha small space that I can't move my arms, even putting ashirt over my head, if it is too tight that I can't move my arms, I will freak out. Gotta be able to move.

Cool ! Maybe if you come up with the name of the phobia you can coin a term for it. Put it on wiki even.

Claustrophobia is my one of my phobias. Confine me or hold me down and I'll freak out, panic attack big time. I'm sure with a bit of mental focus I could avoid the panic.
