While chewing gluttonously on my fat, juicy steak last night I wondered...on Good Friday why is it okay to eat fish...but no meat?
JMPD1
as far as I know, it is a symbol of sacrifice on the part of believers, in homage to JC's suffering on the cross.

Also, in so far as Roman Catholicism is concerned, no meat on Ash Wednesday, and Fridays in Lent.
Aztec Warrior
I don't know. It's about sacrifice or something.

I was consuming sushi, with some sake. Can't eat tacos during lent.
Something Like Laughter
Meat used to be expensive. During Lent, one should be increasing the amount he gives in alms. The extra money would come from avoiding meat. Most Eastern Orthodox avoid meat for all of Lent, and I would imagine RCC used to.
thaphantum
i can only assume you are talking about Catholics... and i have no idea... because i always thought fish WAS meat? hmm.gif

Fish is meat, I don't know why people don't think it is. Fish certainly isn't a vegatable.

I am a vegetarian, and it ticks me off when they tell me it's ok to eat fish, like it isn't meat or a living thing and at the same level as a plant. I loev plants but killing plants really the same as killing animals :B

Lol people.

I agree with Aztec Warrior, I think it is about sacrifice. It probably goes back quite far to the days when blood sacrifices were performed, such as in the Old Testament. I really don't know this for sure and I don't know a lot about this, I'm just speculating here everybody!!!
Anyway, maybe there is a personal sacrifice with a vow to not consume meat, because of the blood sacrifice of the killing of a sacred animal. Possibly? Maybe because they didn't sacrifice fish (at least not that I know of), and because of Jesus multiplying the fish, is the reason fish are still ok to partake of. lol

Meat was expensive and one was supposed to increased one's alms giving during Lent. Cut back on the meat to save money to give away. I would assume that fish was a staple for much of the Christian world and/or was cheaper than land animals.

I understand what you're saying, but I'm trying to understand the possible origins of abstinence from meat. Blood (animal) sacrifice was extremely important in the Bible. So much so that there was a question of whether or not it should be continued even after the sacrifice of Jesus.

For the sake of learning, here is an interesting paragraph from the wiki link about LENT:

"During the early Middle Ages, meat, eggs and dairy products were generally proscribed. Thomas Aquinas argued that "they afford greater pleasure as food [than fish], and greater nourishment to the human body, so that from their consumption there results a greater surplus available for seminal matter, which when abundant becomes a great incentive to lust."[5]"

Fish is meat to me. I've caught them and eaten them before. It's a great form of protein and good fats, good for the brain and heart.

Exactly! Especially soy, which is evil. crying.gif
SilverCougar
And.. why is it wrong to sub beans in for meat?
bornagainuhmanduh
Not wrong at all, I just think soy is bad with all of it's phytoestrogens.
SilverCougar
Dear... only if you eat soy in like *every* meal *every* day *every* month....

Once in a while, a bit of tofu or crunchy soy nuts won't harm you.

For protein, yes, but you can't rely on soy just for protein, nuts, seeds and legumes are good sources too. They say the reason Okinawan's have such a high life expectancy is because they consume so much soy. Can't say I eat it much though..

You cant eat meat as you cant spilll blood because Jesus sacrafised himself on good friday.
Fish have a differnet blood type thing- not entiley sure about the scientific side, but its different from land animals. Also it was always land animals people sacrifised to the "gods" and higher powers, so to eat fish, your not sacrafising an animal- fish arent concidered special in any way really.

As for fish not being classified as "meat" i had an argument in school with my best friend who turned vegetarian, and she was saying fish isnt a meat, unlike what Kaylee was saying!
Where as i said it is a meat. Because it is an animal and has edible flesh. She sadi it was classsed under a different name, all by its self, like how meat has sub classes- red and white. I would classify fish as white meat mainly (minus salmon and that other red fleshed fish)
But- butchers dont sell fish- only beef, pork, chicken- land meat/animals. And you have to go to a place which only sells fish and other marine products, like a fish market....

My hubby like person is a vegitarian. And when I first moved in with him (no, we're not married) he didn't eat fish. However, I did convince him to eat fish. If anything because there is nutriants in fish that you can generaly only get from them.

It's smart to eat seafood. Unless you're allergic.

Yes, fish and seafood are healthy, not even vegetarians can dispute that. I refuse to eat it though, never really have. Mother detests fish.

I guess I am still hardwired as a Catholic as I still try to eat fish on Fridays. It’s just a tradition to remember Christ and the apostles who where mainly fisherman. It’s not a bad tradition and adds variety to the weekly meal planning. So I just look at it as a harmless tradition with healthy consequences.
And yes in my opinion fish is meat.
