I wanna do some research into what ppl consider frightening more so I can have an idea of what to write in a horror/gothic story. Please give examples of how some things scare you if you wish also! Thanx...

I voted psychological... in particular the contrast between innocent looks and an evil mind.

I'd have to say the same as Phantom.

My second choice would have been: Sounds (noises from, paranormal, enviroment, animals etc...)

I voted glimpses. If I saw part of something really freaky as it scampered off into the dark, my mind would come up with some really scary/sick/disturbing stuff that makes up the rest of the creature. And the creature/monster/thing wouldn't really be that freaky looking.
Has anyone ever seen Pitch Black? I couldn't live how Riddick does. Able to see into the dark and all. If I could see what was lurking in the shadows, someone would have to put in the the funny farm aka mental institution.
But then again, if there is something that lurks in the shadows, they haven't hurt us yet, so why be afraid of them? Soemtimes I don't get what I myself am thinking...

I voted Confronted, but it is the animals that scare me the most! Stray dogs, mice, snakes, spiders, things of that nature.

Problem here is that psychological can also include all of the other options in a sense , so this may not help you as much as you think .

True, but it gives me an idea of what affects ppl the most psychologically then.

So in a way it's a win win situation.

I've always had a problem with confrontation, that's why I stopped Judo and Handball competitions...I can't stand the feeling that the opponent facing me only want to beat me...

I say glimpses. If you only have a little bit of information, your imagination kicks in. At least, mine does, and mine has a tendancy to be very good at creating awful things from a mere glimps. Which is why my cat kept scaring me to death when he'd run by the window late at night. Who was it that had the quote about never showing them what's behind the door? Also, hi to you all, from an honest-to-God n00b.

Environment If you don't set the sceen right no amount of anything else will make much difference ..

Living humans scare me most, The cruelty of the human race.

I voted for religious imagery. Some of the most evil crimes against human nature have been commited in the name of religion. I always think that even a psychopathic killer could possibly be reasoned with if you take the right approach. But a SECTARIAN killer could never be reasoned with, as it is their entire belief structure you would be trying to disprove.

Noise. If I can hear things, but can't see them, they could be right behind me.

I voted physiological, because that stuff literally just does your head in.
But Also sound/noise is high up there. When watching a horror movie, it’s all about the music, turn the sound down, and your nerves go down as well!
