In 1988 I met a friend who invited me to his house to spend the night. When I arrived, another one of our classmates, that lived down the street was there. We goofed off for a while in the house, then went outside, and started messing around in the yard. A few minutes later he asked me if I wanted to go to the pit. I said what's the pit. He replied, aw it's this place up here behind my house, it's really cool, but you got to climb down into it. I was game so we walked up through his yard, and before my eyes was this big rock quarry. I was enthralled and was anxious to get to the bottom. We went down this path and climbed down to the bottom. And when we got down there we all heard something up to the left above us, and we saw this thing about 4 feet tall roughly, covered in white fur, scaling the rock ledge like a man would. We all said what the hell is that, and about that time it turned to look at us and we ran back up the trail. I don't think I have ever been more terrified in my life. I had nightmares of that place for 2 weeks straight, to the point that I was scared to go to sleep at night, knowing that I was going to dream of that place, and that thing. We never figured out what it was. We found several traces of animals, dogs, and cats mostly mutilated down there. His dad also told us a few years after we stopped going there, and stopped seeing it, that one night around dusk that something small and furry, that appeared to have horns chased him down the ditch line of their yard. He said it was on all fours like a dog, and that he jumped into his truck, and stayed there for 45mins-an hour. And one time I was dumping leaves in the fall into the pit, and this furry clawed hand reached out of a large hole beside my leg, and tried to grab me. I was so frightened that I fell and was frozen. I couldn't even scream. I just watched as this thing blindly swiped for my leg, like a cat sticking it's arm in a hole to catch a mouse. I finally was able to get to my feet and I ran like hell once again. I don't know what this thing was, or what happened to it. The quarry has since been filled in.

Well the pit was an abandoned rock quarry. It's in my hometown of Kingsport,Tn. Some asshole who lives on the next street over has been dumping trash, and letting construction companies dump shingles, dirt, rock, etc. in it for the last 20 years so it looks nothing like it used to. It's now just a huge backyard to the guy now, and it's kind of sad. But two other people was with me at the time. One of them is now dead. The other I haven't had contact with in a few years. The guy who is dead now, would kinda deny the experience when we talked about it in front of other people, you know trying to not look stupid or whatever his reasons were, but I know what I saw and my other friend does too. It was like the thing hung around for a few years, and then it just up and dissapeared. I don't know if all the dumping that was going on ran it off, or what. There is actually a cave right under where we saw it, but it was covered by huge boulders, and we couldn't ever find a way in. Maybe it knew a way? But there are 2 other caves about 2 miles apart from it, and supposedly they link up to it. I don't know if maybe it still lives underground and roams in those areas hunting, or if it just got the hell out and escaped to somewhere else. I always wanted to check out the other caves to see if I could maybe find signs of it or it's remains. But the city sealed up the caves because kids were partying in them and vandalising.

The thing that chased your dad sounds like some sort of goat. Could it have been a domesticated goat that somehow got loose? The claws going after you don't sound much like a goat though.

this is a wild story, very unusual. it's too bad the caves were blocked off becuz it would be very interesting to have some people explore them for evidence of what you describe. tell me, was the hole in the ground (that it reached out of) over the cave that was blocked by boulders? perhaps it made another way out and a possible way in....

It sounds similar to the Jersey Devil. Were there any other sightings?

Do you still live near there? Have you seen anything since the time it grabbed your leg? Were they like claws, or really long fingernails?

Has your friend ever posted this story on UM before? I ask because I remember reading almost exactly the same story here before...maybe a year or so ago.

This thing almost sounds like a opossum. We've got one that keeps visiting our front porch. They have claws, are light grey (almost white), have pinkish eyes and move strangely (they sort of amble, but they can run, too). I believe they can stand on their back legs. They are a lot smaller than 4 feet, though. Are you sure you got the size right?
