I am reading Sophocles' drama, Oedipus Rex in my college English class, and I find it fascinating. Well, while in psychology, my professor talked about the "Oedipus Complex," which is a mental-disorder in pre-mature boys who desire for their mother. Then, I read up on it myself, and I found a lot about it. Sigmund Freud suggests that is can cause homosexuality. Whether it's true or false, I just want to hear some opinions.

Just a side note: Norman Bates had this condition. Just some useless info.

Well I dont know if it's the same thing causing it, but I have read that homosexuality can be caused by a mental disorder... well something like that, a mental disorder makes it sound as if it's not normal; and I don't have anything against homosexual people.

Niether do I. In fact, I have some friends that are. I was just opening this discussion as another possibility.

If a BOY was in love with his MOTHER, what would this have to do with homosexuality? Boys and mothers are traditionally of different sexes.

According to Freud, the Oedipus complex is a collection of wishes, feelings and ideas that are focussed on the desire to 'possess' the opposite-sex parent. The complex emerges during the Oedipal stage (roughly between the ages 3-5). A person who did not resolve this complex could develop neurotic fixations, sexual aberrations and guilt feelings. Complete resolution occurs when the person 'rediscovers' the opposite-sex parent as a mature, adult sexual object (object = a representative symbol).

EDIT: Much of Freud's work/theory is unpopular thinking and no longer used.
Side Note: Homosexuality was actually considered a mental disorder at one stage.

Fraud was himself a latent homosexual which is why everything that popped into your head had to do with a penis (No pun intended) He also ingested large amounts of opiates so.....Most geneticists would be firm on the fact that homosexuals are born that way. It is 1 gene that is responsible.
