When was the earliest recorded crop circle (or roughly what time)?
Is there a place in ancient history and crop circles or are they relatively new?
REBEL

Rebel,

I'd seen the "mowing devil" before, but the 9th Century Lyons thing I was unaware of. Do you have anything that might indicate that this story is in any way factual at all? All I could find was:
QUOTE
The oldest known recorded crop circle event occurred in the 9th century in France, where the Bishop of Lyon sent out a prohibition to the recently converted locals against using seeds taken from crop circles for pagan fertility rituals.

and
QUOTE
One of the earliest reports was in Lyon in 815AD, and a late 16th Century woodcut depicts the devil mowing a field into patterns.

I'm sure you understand that my feeling for now is that a couple of claims on the internet does not a factual story make.

Got anything else on this?

BTW, in the same search I found a page that has a British expert saying that 17 years of research has shown that 80% of crop circles are definately man made.

QUOTE
Scientist Colin Andrews says 17 years of work has revealed that about 80% of the formations are man-made.

But he believes that magnetism may account for the rest, which display a simplicity of form compared with elaborate, beautiful patterns of the "hoaxes".

No sorry Harte & i hear ya, a few claims on the net don't really do it for me either, but six asked the question and i provided the first couple of 'many' links in regards to the earliest known and recorded CCs.
Hey if you know something i/we don't do tell, some of these CCs are pretty awesome?!

lol!... i'm not biting into this debate on what so called experts say either, but only that they've been wrong before. They been proven and disproven as man made that many times over the years it's enough to make a bloke a little loco.
But having said that i would really like to see how the so called experts prove conclusively beyond doubt how 'most' of these massive & very complex 'man made' patterns appear virtually over night, thats if in fact hoaxes are involved ?

Heres a couple more... most of the sites vary having them dating back from as early as 1590's right thru to to the early 1920's... HOLD IT!... i think i hear the Twilight Zone theme music coming on.

Harte
Rebel,

Thanks for the effort. Allow me to say here that I'm less than convinced.

Far as I know it hasn't been discussed yet, but I've always wondered if another aspect of my own people's medicine wheels created several thousand years ago in various parts of North America could have aided in attempting to communicate with these entities. Here's a few examples:
