YOKOHAMA (Kyodo) Police arrested a 30-year-old man Wednesday in Atsugi, Kanagawa Prefecture, for allegedly abusing pet ferrets and posting footage of the act on the Internet.
Shinichi Moriyama, an employee at a major electric appliance maker, was quoted as telling police he did it "to relieve stress" from work and he had killed "20 or 30 ferrets, hamsters and other animals from around November 2005."
Moriyama is suspected of breaking the Law Concerning the Protection and Control of Animals by hitting at least one ferret on the head several times and attempting to choke it at his home Feb. 12. He also cut off its teeth.
Police also alleged that Moriyama took footage of the tortured animal and posted it on 2 Ch, a popular Internet bulletin board, adding comments like, "I bit it in the leg in revenge" for being bitten on the finger, police said.
If convicted, Moriyama faces up to a year in prison or a fine of 1 million yen for injuring or killing a pet without justifiable reasons
