Sam Hacker, who has been a tattoo artist in Chicago since 1996, was asked by Michael Duplessis to put a tattoo on him that said "Chi-Town". But Hacker accidentally put "Chi-Tonw" on Duplessis. "[I] got a call probably around four," recalled Hacker. "It was two years ago. He said, 'My wife said — she just saw it and she said you spelled it wrong.'" Duplessis has now filed a lawsuit for negligence and fraud, and claiming that he suffered emotional damage from the mistake.
Because of this mistake, Hacker and several of his freinds all got tattoos that say "Chi-Tonw". After the Chicago Tribune wrote several stories about the mistake, strangers started to come to Hacker's parlor wanting "Chi-Tonw" tattoos. "They want it spelled wrong," said Hacker. "They insist on it. They want it spelled the right way, now is what we're saying. They want it spelled C-H-I-T-O-N-W." Because of this, there are shirts in the city that say "Chi-Tonw", and Hacker's prents have a bumper sticker on their Mini Cooper saying "Proud parents of the Chi-Tonw artist". Although it is developing into a trend, Duplessis still didn't like what his tattoo said, and had it altered to "Chi-Town", but is still suing Hacker, who hopes the lawsuit will go away.
