user posted image rNASA has released the new ultra high resolution pictures of the "face on Mars." For just a little bit of background, In 1979, scientists studying pictures of the Martian surface noticed that on the Cydonian plain, there stood out, what seemed to plainly be, a giant face staring out into space. Over the years, scientist Richard Hoagland has studied a series of NASA images. Richard and other investigators have postulated that this face is in fact, ancient architecture fallen into ruin. This structure is one square mile in size, and part of a larger complex which appears to be an ancient Martian city, all fallen into ruins. These latest images reveal details as small as a few inches, and according to Hoagland, appear to confirm the alien architecture hypothesis. Richard Hoagland and his team have doggedly pursued this story, and publicly pushed to have a reluctant NASA provide more high resolution pictures of the Cydonian structures. Much science fiction (such as the popular television series X-Files) and much public ridicule have accompanied this debate. These latest pictures appear to detail walls, windows, and girders. "The debate is over," boasts Richard, "I no longer need to prove that these are ruins, my critics need to prove that they are not."

NASA has methodically explored Mars for decades, but officially, any suggestion that there may once have been life on Mars, let alone intelligent civilization, has been brushed aside in favor of answering more basic questions such as - does water exist in liquid form on the Martian surface? Long before NASA officially admitted it, Hoagland surmised the existence of such liquid water. In another episode, photographic close-ups of the Martain surface snapped by the Martian Rovers, appear to contain tiny fossil-like structures, yet NASA has refused to comment on these images.

it will be nice to see somemore hard evidence.

Well, here's a direct link to the new images of 'the face' on Mars. Frankly, I just don't see anything that indicates that this is an artificial structure...still looks like a mesa to me.

All that is is like the Arulu or Ayer's rock in Australia, that's all. A metorite hit the molten surface billions of years ago and there has no weather to wear it down.

What is Hoagland looking at? There is nothing to see. I guess he needs to sell some more books.

I realy do not see anything in the picture, maybe that guys mind is warped into martian belief or something... I shouldn't really say things like that, but i will.

Wind erosion has been discovered on Mars. Pictures of regions surrounding the north polar cap show sand dunes covered in frost. In places, however, this frost has been eroded to uncover the dark sand underneath. Since this frost can only be as old as the Martian winter is long, this erosion must have taken place within the past Martian year. Once established, it is easy to visualize that much of the appearance of the above region has been sculpted by wind blown dust. Because the Martian atmosphere is so thin, a person standing on Mars would not get blown over by these Martian winds.

As much as I'd like to believe, I don't see anything other than erosion either.

Hmm I thought he said there were windows and things where the heck does he see these things???

Is he looking at the same pics or does he have ones that are photoshopped? * gives a wicked giggle*

Turn it upside down and I can see Skeletor.

Go back to the image of the 'face' on Mars. Why is that the only crater around with something in the middle of it? Is it because a diamond rock pushed up from the center through the molten surface? We know that maybe somebody did not build it. But, it does look like a tall mountain that was covered with a layer of something (notice the upper part of the photo of the face). It shows a layer that is like a sharp rock sticking through the skin of the surface. I imagine a couple of millions of years worth of wind will wear it down if it has been there for that long. I think the whole surface of the planet was molten and so was mercury, venus, and earth.

Richard should change his last name to Hoaxland.

I'm skeptical there really is a face on Mars. The early picture looks like a face. I believe it was taken by the Vicking orbiter. But, I saw a more recent picture of the "face" taken at a higher resolution and it didn't look like a face. I'm not going to try and download a picture that is 300 megabytes to find out what Rich C. Hoagland is talking about. I don't believe too much that Richard C. Hoagland says. He doesn't seem to be all that credible to me. I think the "structures" on Mars are too big to be artificial. Most likely they're mountains. If they were artificial structures they would dwarf most manmade structures. They would be up there with the great wall of China. That's the only manmade structure I know of that compares.

I downloaded the 300 meg file and studied it carefully. I saw nothing that could possibly be imagined to be structures, no matter how eroded. It's just a huge natural formation. I give Hoagland credit for having a powerful imagination. He seems able to make up vast cities that nobody else can see.

Here he shows pictures of rocks and claims to see machine parts scattered over the surface of Mars (near the bottom of the page):

They just look like rocks to me. I'm a mechanical engineer and have seen lots of machine parts. I don't see any in his pictures.
