Hello everyone! I was just wondering if i'm the ONLY one who noticed that movie reviewers this season are becoming increasingly harsh? Where it is true that some of the movies that get a bad rap desereve it, there are those i think (and I'm not alone in this) got what some of the worst reviews I've ever heard. Take for Instance the sequel X-Men 2: X-Men United. Before the movie was released here in the states on DVD a local critic in my native San Diego RE-reviewed it and said that it was a "overblown effects bru-ha ha" and "Due to the over use of effects and horrible acting on ALL parts (EVEN Ian McKellen!!!!) the movie was in no other words a theatrical MUGGING." Okay, take into account the use of effects because i dunno the main characters are ummmmmm MUTANTS and to show their powers they HAVE to use effects (can you imagine patrick stewart with a very concentrated look on his face while placing a tin foil cap on his head and calling it the "machine Cerebro?" Or james Marsden's Cyclpos running people down with a pair of 3-d glasses on his face making laser sounds with his mouth "PShew! Psheeeeew!" ?)
I think that people are getting a raw deal if they actually LISTEN to what the critics have to say. I just got done reading a bunch of reviews for movies such as X-Men 2, Gothika, The Missing, 21 Grams, Timeline and more. ALL of which said that these movies were a waste of time and money. Well mister Critic men and women with negative aspects on EVERYTHING have i got something to say to you!!I have read and subsequently seen most of the new movies that have come out, and have been absolutely DUMBFOUNDED. What is with all the movie bashing? yeah, some movies that come out of Hollywood are nothing BUT crap, and some are actually very valiant efforts on behalf of the film makers to make excellent films. And i believe that most of the time, if an audience is thrilled with a movie, then it's a success. Movies are SUPPOSED to make you feel emotional. Good or bad.see the movie from a human perspective instead of a paid for opinion critic. Humanity and basic human nature seems to escape some critics when giving their opinions on certain movies and roles. They blasted "Timeline", and i thought it was a great movie. It was fantasy and most of the critics i read blasted it due to it being "unreal" and "overimagined." I thought movie goers went to the movie to ESCAPE reality. Get with it Critics! Do some soul searching, figure out what you're REALLY angry about, THEN watch some movies and tell us what you think about them. I just hope after all that, we can agree on SOMETHING.

100% agreed...
Some of the best films of the year have been X-2, Finding Nemo, Freddy Vs. Jason, Terminator 3, and Pirate of the Carribean. All of those films recieved at least a few negative reviews, and I found all of them to be thorougly enjoyable...

The local movie critic seems to hate all good movies. He gave The Two Towers 1.5 out of 5. He said it, "has no real beginning or end." He also said that the effects, especially gollum looked fake. unless i am mistaken The Two Towers won an oscar for special effects.
He gave Die Another Day and X2 similar grades, but then he gave Lizzie McGuire a four!!!!!!!! po.gif

The problem with movie critics is that they often have lives that are entirely engulfed into the world of theatre . What this leads to is that they end up comparing movies with other movies they have seen and if not enough new things have come up they give it a bad review . This can happen the other way around as well , they see something that shows multiple new perspective or something that cant be compared and give it a good review even if it sucks . In other words , you can't always trust them because unlike them you haven't seen everything already .

Some examples of poor reviews

American Girl - five stars

Did anyone watch this movie ? Guess what , it showed perspective of a valley girls life in a new light.... AND BOY DID IT STINK !!! This movie won movie of the year ! And it is in no way shape or form entertaining !!

Feardotcom - one star

This movie basically copied the ring , but despite its psychosis I think it deserved at least 3 .

South park . bigger long and uncut - one star

Thrown together and incredibly stupid beyond measure , but still hilarious .

Movie critics have just lost their sense of taste after destroying it with garbage . It would be kind of the same as Pizza for lunch every day ... after a while you will take it for granted .

wink2.gif Thanks for letting me know i wasn't the only one reading the negative in what they NAGATIVELY had to say about the movies we all love and enjoy. You know, even if i was a movie critic (which to me would be a dream job) i could never turn as bias and negative as most of these people are. If movies are what make you a living, and reviewing them is what gets you paid, concentrate a little harder and get envolved with the movie story lines! I read an article on "The Missing" yesterday, and was laughing because the reviewer hadn't even paid attention to the movie before writing about it. He said that Tommy Lee Jones' character was an Apache indian and that his daughter Cate Blanchet's character was half. okay, hate to ruin this for anyone who hasn't seen the movie, buuuuuuuuut, Tommy Lee Jones wasn't a Native American. He had left his family to go LIVE WITH the Apache, and later in the movie other Apache refer to him as a "make believe indian." So how does that make him an Indian and Cate Blanchett half? Grrrrrrrr, and excuse me? But some critic actually gave The Two Towers 1.5 starz? What what WHAT?! No real begining or end huh? Well, funny how it's the CONTINUING story of a trilogy and LEAVES OFF at a point where the next will pick up. It's not supposed to be taken as it's OWN movie, but as a set of three! I guess that goes along with my angst against the guy who gave a bad review of X-2 recently. Although i did like my little home movie version of what X2 would have looked like without all the Hollywood effects. LOL

Hmmm...
So I guess he hated The Empire Strikes Back as well... or for that matter the second installment in any trilogy.
He liked the Lizzie Maguire movie???
Obviously a dolt who is a waste of human flesh... no logical explanation could be proposed that would explain why he would detest films like The Two Towers and praise taudry, pre-teen trash like Lizzie Maguire.

Movie critics are an enigma...
Everyone loves to hate them... and few to no regular citizens agree with thier views. Yet, papers and stations still pay millions of dollars per year to bankroll these cinematic chimps. Why? Apparantly because the people of the world love to here someone tell them how much a movie stinks before they go watch it and fall in love with it...
A good film is meant to be entertaining foremost, and a little insightful next. It does not nessecarily have to be completely different or cater to the whims of critics and self-proclaimed "movie buffs."
Personally...
I put critics just one step lower on the evolutionary later than lawyers... That puts pond scum on the third rung from the bottom. wink2.gif

The critic I was speaking of was Daniel Neman of The Richmond Times-Dispatch (VA). What Xenojinn said was right, cause this guy only likes foreign films, artsy films, and disney films. Basically all the ones other people hate. Other blockbusters he disliked were spiderman (2), Men In Black II (1), The Matrix (1.5).

P.s.: Timeline was good, even if it was a little unfaithful to the book.

Yes, I agree. I never take any notice of critics.

Oh ye, critics!
For a while, Amazon.com posted Leonard Malton and Marshall Fine's review of ALIEN. These two self-inflated blowhards dare to said Ridley Scott's horror masterpiece was "too slow", and "some people's idea of a good time".

They finally took them down after all the positive reviews written by ordinary movie goers, who also hurled snorts of deirison toward Maltin and Fine.

Any critics who said ALIEN wasn't good have no credility whatsoever.

I am one of those people that sit down to watch a movie and pick faults with it all the way through.

I don't like to listen to movie critics on either the television or the radio because if they give my movie (that I want to see) a bad review then I don't watch it. Damnit. Anyway a movie has to have good promos on tv for me to go and waste fouteen bucks. ^^;
