My husband was telling me about two rich men who were heading a movement to have Texas become its own country in the 80's. He said they got thrown in jail without a trial, and no charges were brought on them and they lost all their money to the government some how. I guess they were held for years, or they are still being held? Anyone else hear of this and have more information? Anything along these lines would be interesting, even if it's not the same timeline.

Hunt Brothers?

Really, I've seen/read over a dozen separate "movements"... many still active. Many Texans Not in a movement are open to the idea as well.

I've never heard this before. The only state I've ever heard of breaking off is California, and that is because of earthquakes tongue.gif.

Texas has it's own Air Force, Navy, and one of the largest state National Guards. It also has one of the largest, busiest ports in the world, one of the busiest air hubs in the world, and by itself would have one of the 10 wealthiest economies in the world (I read that in an article but I can't recall where I read it), and Texans' pride would probably support a move towards independence if it was ever seriously discusse.

For me one thing is certain about Texas, it's breeds & produces the gutsiest & greatest blues & blues/rock in the world. thumbsup.gif grin2.gif

Well, we did once fight one Civil War to prove that you can't just skip out on the Union.

...But if Texas wanted to leave, I'm not sure too many people would fight to keep it.

texas almost needs to be its own country just to support its ego..haha

i dont know if yall seen it on the news during huricane katrina the powers that be of jefferson parish, declared they were nolonger part of the united state or louisiana and enacted marshal law closing all their borders,,shutting down bridges and roads leading into town.turning people away at gun point giving them water and telling them to go back where they came from..not a hole bunch was said about it or any criminal charges brought up.

heres one of the few write up's i found on it,,my boss lives in that area and is a deputy he told me about all kind of stuff before it hit the news and was waterd down.

Gee... if Texas wasn't part of the US, George W couldn't be our president....

Talk is cheap, fool. gunsmilie.gif Let's do this gunsmilie.gif

At first glance, I'm for it. Texas has a unique spirit. We kind of have our own culture.

We also have wealth. I think it could be pulled off. I'll be putting more thought to this today and looking at some stuff.
MoonPrincess
I haven't heard of anything like that. Who knows. I was just a baby in the mid 80's.

When Texas was admitted into the United States in the 1840's, it was so big compared to the other states, that it was given the option in the future to separate into 5 states. However that has not happened because no one can decide who gets The Alamo.

And I used to laugh at people from Quebec that wanted to seperate............

But one question that popped up in my head: would Texas be allies/trading partners with the US? Would they be enemies? Rivals? If not the US, who would be their biggest trading partner/allie? I doubt it would happen. Chances are they wouldn't let them out without a fight, and a fight between Texas alone and the rest of the United States would hardly be considered fair. Unless some other states joined in, then prepare for a second American Civil War!!

I live in Texas and I can tell you for sure the Hunt brothers are not in Jail and have not been since I was born (29 years ago). I have met Ray Hunt and trust me when I say they all still have their wealth.

Do you live in the U.S. ? Some people may want to seperate, but do think anyone in their right mind would want to be enemy's with the United States just because they seperated. It would be suicide for a fight. The only reason for a seperation would probably be to keep the dead beats from coming here and there would probably be more money invovled.
snappydragon
Well thank you all for your response. It would be interesting to note about what their alience would be to us, That could be a rreason to sqaush it in the bud for sure. I will look up the Hunt brothers.
conspiracysrus
well im not an american but if i ever wanted to live in th u.s id choose texas wink2.gif
and i bet that the rest of the u.s would be much happier once those texans sealed that border (and you know they would).
much of the stuff that foreigners think is typical u.s culture is really typically texan. some may hate that and some may not but for me texas is the u.s.
REBEL
I don't want to get into the political side of a ''breakaway state debate''...
Thats unethical and for a great country like the United States of America...emphasis on 'United'.

But having said that, what Texas has that no other state has is the night life of Northside with The Horseman, Billy Bob's, Electric Cowboy & then they have the Gypsy Tea Room in Dallas, the Church at deep ellum is the wildest goth club around in Dallas, Underground in Fort Worth all the wildest hangouts for the wildest night life that no other place has that i have yet to experience! w00t.gif laugh.gif thumbsup.gif

Then theres the brew that Texas is famous for possibly the best in America...''Lone Star'' devil.gif

Finally theres the wide endless Texas highways & the magnificent scenery that only Texas has, perfect for riding forever. thumbsup.gif

itsnotoutthere
With Bush's resistance to the opposition shown by Putin over Chetnia, I wonder how he would reconcile this if Texas wanted to be independent.
MissMelsWell
I remember the movement in the 80's for Texas and it's independence... I seem to recall an economics class I had later in life where we looked at this and we realized that it would not be possible for Texas to support itself without any federal help.

As I understood it, there's only ONE state that's capable of sustaining itself based solely on it's own money and natural resources without any kind of federal help. Alaska.
The Mule
I once heard that if Texas were it's own country, it would rank 3rd in the world in number of sanctioned executions.

Obviously I don't live in the US or else my profile would say "United States" as opposed to "Canada".

I remember hearing that it was Alaska that had a large seperation movement some years ago and that the founder/leader died under mysterious cicumstances.

I remember hearing the UL when I was growing up that Texas maintained the right to suceed from the union but, never did. Then I thought about it, they did in the "War of Northern Agression"! I do remember that the last battle of that war was fought in Texas and it was a Confederate victory.

Still, the real question has to be "What would be gained by leaving the Union?" Wouldn't they be rather limited in the heavy industry department?

If I remember my history right, Texas secceeded from the United States of Mexico and became it's own nation for a short time before it petitioned the U.S. for statehood in the hopes that the U.S. would send troops to fight the Mexican army. The U.S. voted in favor of statehood and assisted the Texans with thier fight to leave the United States of Mexico. In the War of Northern Agression, they sided with the C.S.A. in the hopes of being able to maintain their main industry, cotton farming.

Now, the population is largely Mexican and Mexican decendant. Perhaps they already are becoming more like their own nation again.
