I am the author of a new(ish) book entitled "Is There Life After Death, The Extraordinary Science of What Happens When You Die". I suspect that this book may be of great interest to members of this forum. The book was released in August 2006 and as sold over 13,500 copies world-wide since then. i really like the passage from your book and i found it interesting. I think i might buy your book soon. I have had a couple near death experriences but the closest one ive had happened when i came out of my drumming lesson last year on a monday. I came out and crossed the road to get to the tram stops, whilst i was at the tram stop i looked one way to see if my tram was coming, it was so i starting to jog across, but as i did so did the tram that was coming from the other way, and i was yanked back by a guy, as he did so the tram brushed the side of my head. After i thanked the guy i was shaking all over, i was dizzy and i felt strangley relaxed. When i got home i could only remember being scared after the guy saved me and nothing about the trip back home it was really weird because i didnt hit my head hard at all.

I do hope your book doesn't indicate that NDE are supernatural. Atleast I hope that it mentions that it happens to fighter pilots when doing the G-force test under strictly controlled circumstances under which death is not possible?

Spot on. I deal with the physics not the metaphysics. If you read the book you will see exactly where I am coming from. For me the NDE is fully explicable using known neurological effects brought about by the brain being flooded by a particular neurotransmitter - glutamate. This is one of the chemicals that brings about the NDE state experienced by pilots (and mountaineers etc). As you may be aware Professor Karl Janson of the Maudsley Hospital in London has also reproduced NDE - like experiences in patients who have been administered doses of ketamine. Ketamine duplicates the effect of endogenous chemicals such as glutamate. Indeed technically it is not glutamate that causes the sensation but the temporal lobes protecting themselves from the 'glutamate flood' and in doing so they bring about a state of hypoxia or oxygen starvation.

Additionally, who's to say that at that level of G-force they are not about to die.
What level G-force was it?
If the next level of G-force is applled what happens to the pilots?
Do they black out?
What are they're vital signs?
Are they on the brink of death?

Just an idea.
