Hi everyone,

This is my first post here and I’m looking for a bit of advice. I’m about to embark on a writing project concerning werewolves and I’m hoping someone can give me some reading recommendations.

I’m looking to read some factual work about the history of the werewolf legend in reality and in popular culture. So I’m not really looking to read any novels but if there’s something really terrific you could recommend then please do.

I’ve searched around on Amazon but couldn’t really come up with much, so your help and guidance would really be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Charlie.

Welcome to the forum.

I have done some research into werewolves in the past. Good historical information is hard to come by. I suggest starting with the Cynocephali (Latin for Dog-heads) stories about them are what probably started the werewolf myth in the first place. A good book that deals with them and others is Myths of the Dog-Man by David Gordon White (The University of Chicago Press 1991). It's a good book, that was well researched by the author. I will warn you though, David Gordon White, is a complex writer and your vocabulary skills will be put to the test reading this one. As far as I know this book in not currently in print, but some may still be around. I found my copy on Amazon. Another one you might try is The Book of Werewolves by Sabine Baring Gould (Causeway Books 1973). This one is not bad, but the author doesn't really care much for the topic of werewolves. It is nevertheless an informative read. A third that is probably much easier to find would be, The Werewolf Book by Brad Steiger (Visible Ink Press 1999), this is more of an encyclopedia of werewolf lore than anything else, it has alot of usless stuff in it (like werewolf movies and stories) but it does contain some good information. Also, don't forget to check out the books by Linda Godfrey, she has two out, The beast of Bray road, and Hunting the American Werewolf. Hope that helps.

Good Journey.
