To all the English and England.

Happy St georges day!

ST GEORGE OF ENGLAND

By shamrock, leek and thistle
We know the Celtic tribes,
Saints Andrew, Patrick, David,
They have their several scribes.

In Gaelic, Erse and Cymric
They chant their patrons' praise,
And wear with pride their emblems
Upon the festive days.

But English on St. George’s Day
Do seldom wear the Rose,
Though still in many an English heart
The ancient passion glows.

The red cross flies for Shakespeare,
The red cross flies for George,
While yet the soul of England
Is hammered on the forge;

But when the soul of England
Arise from present gloom,
That Rose in resurrection
Shall blaze in brighter bloom.

On this St. George’s Day, then,
That saw our Shakespeare born,
The Rose is rooted in our hearts -
And we can bear the thorn.

Good point!

I don't know, but I will tell you this, around where I live, last year on St George's Day many of the pubs were told NOT to put up flags etc lest it may offend those of other nationalities. However, one pub took exception to this and, as they had done in the previous years, without any trouble I hasten to add, placed flags and banners celebrating St George's Day. Actually there were two pubs which did this, and one of them was where my husband, friends and I drank that day original.gif

Facts About good ol' George...

Who was St George?
A good question and one that's hard to answer with any great degree of accuracy. Generally though, it's held that he was born in Turkey to Christian parents in the third century AD. When his father died, he and his mother moved to Palestine, where he became a soldier during the reign of Roman emperor Diocletian (245-313). Unfortunately, Diocletian was a bitter opponent of Christianity. George apparently told the Emperor that he was too harsh in his treatment of Christians, and when he left the army George was imprisoned and tortured for seven years. Eventually, after refusing to recant, George was beheaded at Lydda in Palestine.

How did St George become England's patron saint?
The elevation of St George to patron saint status took some time but began when he was accorded a minor religious feast day by the Oxford synod in 1222. By the end of the 14th century he'd been adopted as England's patron saint and in 1415, the year of the battle of Agincourt, Archbishop Chichele ordered St George's Day to be observed like Christmas Day.

Where does the St George's flag come from?

The flag of St George – which is shown as a red cross on a white background, symbolising his martyrdom – became the uniform for English soldiers probably as far back as the reign of Richard 1 and became England's flag at some point in the late Thirteenth century. The cross was incorporated into the Union Jack when the Act of Union took place in 1707.

Is he purely an English saint?

Far from it – in fact St George is also the patron saint of Portugal and Lithuania and St George's Day is a huge event in Catalonia where everyone wears red roses to commemorate it. In many countries St George is associated with fertility and his day marks the very beginning of summer.

Did you know...?
It's an odd, but apparently true, fact that Shakespeare was born and died on St George's Day – obviously several years apart!

i completly agree, i am a brit living in norway. And every year on the 17th of may they celebrate their national day of independence, they all have the day off, and you can see how proud they are to be norwegian. And every year i think man England needs to regain some pride in its self. I know there are a lot of proud english as i am one of them.
I am sick of hearing no we can fly our flag. i remember reading in an english newspaper when the world cup was on that cab drivers werent alowed to wear england shirts or shirts with an english motive on it, because of offending other nationalities. sorry but if they are offended then that is their problem and should consider moving to another country. LONG LIVE ST GEORGE'S DAY

Its just "Merry Saint George's day, don't forget about Catalonia". Saint George (Sant Jordi) is also the patron saint of Catalonia and it is widely celebrated there as the main national holiday.
