What is the point of moving threads? When you move a thread from one section to another the thread still stays there. All that changes is a red arrow is placed on it and it says the topic has been moved. Really all that's happening here is the link to the thread is being duplicated, cluttering up the forums even more than it was when people posted in the wrong section.

The red arrow is there to let people know where the thread has gone, it's a link to a thread; without it nobody would know where the thread has been moved to. Moving threads isn't about preventing clutter, it's about placing topics in to relevant board sections to keep related discussions together and easy to find.

Yes, but I see topics that have been 'moved' out of an inappropriate section, but the thread still stays in the inappropriate section indefinitely. It's not really being moved, it's just being copied somewhere else.

This isn't really difficult to grasp. As SaRuMaN has already explained the thread is moved to the correct section. A link is left in the old section. There is no copying. The thread isn't left behind, it is move to where it should be.

In addition to everything else, a moved topic link (red arrow) can never be bumped to the top of a thread. All posts made will only move the actual topic to the top of the page. The red arrow will eventuall disappear into the oblivion of page 2. If wrong-topic threads are left where they are, they may/will clutter up the page with each new post, depriving on-topic discussion for the section.

We could of course not include a red arrow, but as has been mentioned, no one will know where the topic has gone, unless they search the entire site.
