Was looking through a disk I had from last winter. Just wondering what your thoughts were? Something explainable or not? I remember taking pictures outside of our cottage but I don't remember lights whizzing by. Out of the sky.
Pretty interesting. Actually, it looks like lightning. Usually when you capture a quick picture of lightning it turns out like that close up. That's all I could think of. I'm pretty sure it isn't a "Winter Fireball" as you called it. Cool picture.

I expected to see 'orb' pictures... or rather light reflecting off of snow flakes or frost particles. I have no idea what you have there other then maybe lightning like the earlier poster said. Do you remember what the weather conditions were? Sometimes you can get lightning in the winter google is a wonderful thing.... here's an article.

Edited by me to add....
Silly me I looked at the photo close up and noticed that it's blurry, as though your hands were shaking (which was most likely, since it was winter and it was cold outside LOL). So what ever the light source was could have been blurred to cause a trail or tail?

Looks to me like the camera shutter was held open for a little longer than usual.

I can hardly work the camera let alone mess with the picture. It was a nice clear night so I don't know. I thought it was interesting. I was taking a picture of my cottage off the lake. It was a digital camera so I don't know anything about shutters.

I'm just saying that looks like the end result of many hoax photos with the technique of leaving the shutter open. A famous one is where someone left the shutter open on a camera an entire night pointing at the moon. The end result was it looked like a gigantic orb streaking across the sky.

We have seen balls of fire come thru the front lawn here at night.... The old folks call it swamp gas or something like that or another..

It looks braided if you look close to it. Did you possibly have something thin and braided that could have fell in front of the camera?

Long exposure, and the camera moved. That is what it looks like to me. Streetlights will look like that when you move the camera while taking the picture. You've seen time-lapse video of car headlights on the street, where they look like a line of light instead of individual lights. The rest of the pic is blurry, so I suspect an unsteady hand while snapping the photo.

me and my cousin have seen this thing before, we saw some sort of orange streaking ball appear out of no where about 200m in front of us and it travelled down about 10m and then disapeared, it looked like this picture!

Like I said we were at our cottage on the lake. There are no streetlights at out cottage. It is not something in front of the camera(e.g. strap) because it lit the snow below it as you can see. All I saw was a flash and I was snapping a picture. If you notice the snow is an orange color. As for the shutter again, you cannot leave it open longer on a digital camera. If others have seen orange fireballs then I don't feel so bad.... and yes the camera was moving a little as it was -29 out that night.

Well, if not street light, then some other light source. As for shutter speed on the digital camera, you can leave the shutter open longer, shutter speed depends on what settings you have for your camera, I don't think there is a setting specifically for the shutter speed, rather that speed is determined by what other settings you have. I would imagine settings for lower light would have a slower shutter speed.

All the other pictures I took that night were fine. No streaks or lights. Just that one.

That is another odd one! I guess what I meant are there others of the cottage in the same position without the oddities that you could post for comparison?

The picture is just of a streetlight's light when the camera is shaken, the light bend like that. FOr example:

Also, I looked at the picture a little more close, and look, I see what looks like a streetlight post.

Clearly a streetlight.

Like I said before. We are in the middle of nowhere. Deep in the bush. No streetlights anywhere. Those are trees.
