Unfortunately, a lot of games (and ISPs come to that) do not support Vista at the moment

As most new computers are now already loaded with Vista, it should only be a matter of time before everything is compatible.
It does annoy me though, they bring out Vista and load all new computers with it without even updating other software and ISPs so that we can use them

I wonder if the chicken and the egg had so many problems...

during play, the screen blanks, and it says "display driver has stopped responding and has recovered". probably just my stupid emachine, but a calculator should be able to play diablo 2 geez

Sounds like the video card, what is it? Is it intergrated?
I have an intergrated card, it sucks, and I get that error sometimes when Im playing simple games. And Im running, Windows XP Media Edition.

D2 came out in June 2000, almost 7 years ago lol. It's too old.. maybe.

I don't think thats the problem. I play Master of Orion 2 with my friend on Vista and it works fine. MoO 2 is published in 1997.

Reinstall the game using Compatiability mode. Place the CD into the drive & do not let it autorun. Browse the CD using Explorer to the setup file and right click it. Select the compatability tab and set compatiability to Windows 98 or XP. OK out of it then install it using the setup file that you just altered. This fixes 90% of older games under Vista & XP.

I'm on XP so I don't know if you'll be able to do this in exactly the same way on Vista, should be pretty similar though.
Go to the Start Menu and find the icon for Diablo 2, right click it and go to properties. Then click the Compatibility tab at the top and change the settings like this:

Pretty much what Nomad said but it's faster to do. Should fix it.

I'd dual boot then (if I had Vista). Not a perfect solution. But better than nothing.

i have found out how to run diablo 2 on windows vista.
step 1: install diablo 2 normally.
step 2: during the video test, select direct draw.
step3: load diablo 2 and run the update from when you try to access battle.net (it does not matter which server you pick)
step4: once the update is installed, go back to video test and run it through direct3d
grats, your running diablo 2 on vista.

I had a similar issue when I was trying to load up GTA: San Andreas and another game that I cant recall at the moment... Honestly what fixed the problem for me:::
Ctrl + Alt +Delete > Processes
System Process: ATI Graphics Display
I had 2 of those running, I killed both and then tried to load the game up. It played like a dream. I hate vista.
