Full Version: Narcissistic Personality Disorder

I myself have known a few people who have Narcissistic Personality Disorder. They generally think everyone is talking about them when its a broad topic. Ex. You are discussing what you used to bring to school for lunch as a kid and they think you are mocking them for what they ate for lunch the other day.

I found this article that discussing the issue in an interesting way and one of the things that jumped out at me was this line:

QUOTE
Narcissists are (a) extremely sensitive to personal criticism and (cool.gif extremely critical of other people. They think that they must be seen as perfect or superior or infallible, next to god-like (if not actually divine, then sitting on the right hand of God) -- or else they are worthless. There's no middle ground of ordinary normal humanity for narcissists. They can't tolerate the least disagreement. In fact, if you say, "Please don't do that again -- it hurts," narcissists will turn around and do it again harder to prove that they were right the first time; their reasoning seems to be something like "I am a good person and can do no wrong; therefore, I didn't hurt you and you are lying about it now..." -- sorry, folks, I get lost after that. Anyhow, narcissists are habitually cruel in little ways, as well as big ones, because they're paying attention to their fantasy and not to you, but the bruises on you are REAL, not in your imagination.

They will attack you (sometimes physically) and spew a load of bile, insult, abuse, contempt, threats, etc., and then -- well, it's kind of like they had indigestion and the vicious tirade worked like a burp: "There. Now I feel better. Where were we?" They feel better, so they expect you to feel better, too. They will say you are nothing, worthless, and turn around immediately and say that they love you. When you object to this kind of treatment, they will say, "You just have to accept me the way I am. (God made me this way, so God loves me even if you are too stupid to understand how special I am.)"

Now it occurred to me that the newest kind of religion is one the rejects the typical old school type religion that expects the participant to be a mere participant. THe narcissist wants to be part of a religion that lets them hang with the head honcho, sit at Gods right hand so to speak.

Take people like Madonna and Tom Cruise who joined religions that had tiers that you could buy your way through rather than act like a decent human being. Religion with ranks.

Some people just make up their own religion. "I believe in God and God knows me and we are connected so if you don't like it then tough, cause God knows what I mean."

What I'm wondering is what the point is in having an organized religion with oneself? If you are being an active critic of "religion" but hanging on to your own "version" of God and insisting that you have it all figured out and just the rest of the Christians for example are too stupid or narrow minded to figure it out.....aren't you basically holding yourself up from Criticism by not truly discussing your religion while you trash someone elses?

And why is it that it is totally acceptable for you to have your own "version" of God, but if a Chrisitan says that they have their own version of the religion even if they accept the basic tenents of the religion, you scowl at them and call them liars and hypocrites?

I find it interesting when people behave this way because it really is as if they have appointed themselves the mighty judgement of God theory and sit perched on a throne wanting to lord over people their NPD because probably in real life they have no friends left.

What say you?

I suspect that the people here that are like that will not see themselves in this topic and of course they will be right. grin2.gif

I agree. But I do think its interesting that religion is getting recreated in the land of Hollywood where its known for its NPD people.

Religion used to be able controlling morality and public decency. Now we have a bimbo on a cross who's going to temple on the weekends I mean eh? disgust.gif

I think that peoples responses are far too often attributed to personality disorders. The media LOVES it!!! While there are plenty of people that suffer from them out there, i sometimes see one characteristic of a person suddenly being catagorized with a whole personality disorder. But personality disorders have many characteristics which differ in cause and strength from case to case.

So as for people making up their own religions and being heavily critical towards others, i do not think that NPD can be soley to blame, its mainly because some people are judgmental and defensive for a host of other reasons. Some may have it, some may not. It is very common for some of the positive symptoms of schizophrenics to suffer from delusions of God that are non negotiable also.

I do regret that you put this in the spirituality section...religion is a very small aspect and a lot of people that have this disorder aren't religious.

That's an interesting response. I was curious about the schizophrenics and delusions of God....wow the symptoms of schizophrenia are really interesting to read.

Ex.

QUOTE
Delusions, which are false irrational beliefs, not based on reality, can take many forms, the schizophrenic may be deluded that they are more powerful or important than any other human, that they have god like powers or knowledge, they may believe they are a person from history; these delusions are referred to as delusions of grandeur They may experience paranoid delusions, that they are being persecuted and that someone or something is conspiring against them, or trying to harm them.

QUOTE
A schizophrenic whilst in conversation will change from one subject to another, Words may take on special meanings to them, either because they trigger private associations or because they pay particular attention to individual sounds rather than whole words for example 'Psychiatry' Might be heard as 'sigh kaya tree' so the schizophrenic will change the subject from psychiatry to mystical trees also they may avoid some words because they sound abusive or evil

Well I wanted to talk about the religious aspects of it. For a while I've been dealing with some people who display all the characteristics of NPD and I've been following the story of Tom Cruise and Scientology.

Obviously a lot of mean people behave this way, but I'm interested in the way it relates to the metamorphisis of religion.

Many people suggest that religion was used to 'control the masses' so what purpose does this relgious change have?

when I started my class.. there was a woman in it who was that. Everytime she enters the room, the topic *HAD* to be about her and her life... everytime someone was talking about something, she *HAD* to force it that she was the utmost authority on whatever it is we were talking about. Reguardless he fact that she really hadn't a flipping clue.

So glad she went to clinic and is out of the class now...

WELL interesting though, a little criticle i have to say, i mean its not peoples fault that they suffer from PD's, and there were some points where it seemed like the writer was trying to warn us away from them.

I would think it would come down to more of something like authoritarian disorder, especially from those who defend their religion in such abrasive manners.

We have recently closed a thread in which someone implied that everyone with a particular belief (in that particular case UFOs) were mentally ill. This thread is making similar claims about people with certain beliefs. This is nothing short of trolling and on the grounds of consistency this thread is now closed.
