What exactly is Mel's Hole?

Mel's Hole is the name of hole claimed to have been found by a man named Mel Waters; according to Waters, the hole is infinitely deep and possesses paranormal powers, including the ability to revive the dead. Despite extensive efforts, the hole has never been located by anyone else, and none of Mel's claims about it have ever been confirmed. Waters publicised its existence on episodes of Coast to Coast with Art Bell airing between 1997 and 2002, claiming to have located the hole on property he owned located near Ellensburg, Washington, near the Manastash Ridge. Art Bell[citation needed] and a number of his listeners believe in the existence of the hole, and some continue to search for it today.

From what I found, he has in no way gone down there. He says the land was taken from him by the government and he found another one in Nevada.

WOW!!! I just read the whole story, on the Wikipedia site, and I have to say, I want some of what this guy is on. Actually, no I really don't. This is really fantastic, in a bad way. But, it would make a GREAT paranormal fiction book. LOL I truely do try to have an open mind, but this is hard for even me to fathom. Sheeps, that are cooked, and then a seal-like creature comes from a blob that was it's internal organs? I don't know, it sounds to me like this guy needs his dosage checked.

Yeah, quite bizarre.

Mel's Hole was discused in this room about 2 months ago. And most people, including those of us who have lived in the Ellensburg, Washington State area do not give it any credit.

The geology of the Kitittas Valley does not lend itself to a vertical hole of any depth. The region was very volcanicly active. With many (maybe hundreds) of lava flows from cracks in the ground. If a hole was created, it would have been filled by the next lava flow. You can see the layers of bassalt lava flows by driving down the Yakima River Canyon between Ellensburg and Yakima on State Route #821. Where the river cuts through Manastash Ridge.

Now there could be a horizontal lava tube someplace or a overhanging rock shelter. But the closest lava tube I know of is Boulder Cave some 60 miles away. And a rock shelter sure does not fit the discription. There have been some mine shafts dug years ago. But most (like the ones in the Liberty Mining District just north of Ellensburg) are more dug into the side of hills than vertical shafts.

The Manastash Ridge area is a major recreation area. And have a lot of 3 and 4 wheel ORV,s and dirt bikes most every day of the year. And the kids with their 4x4 jeeps are all over the area. So if it exists, I think someone would have found and publicized Mel's Hole before now.

Thanks for the info and the link. You have to admit, it's an interesting story, although, from what I'v seen, I would have to say that this guy Waters seems to have a few screws loose. Time will tell.

Good Journey.

I got to school up here... people go out and look for it all the time.

It's definitely one of my favorite mysteries.
