I've been thinking about creating a statue of the Flatwoods Monster for some time (having been inspired by the Mothman Statue,) but I need help. Any ideas on how to create one? I can create a statue, but not like the stainless steel Mothman Statue. Please give me some tips on how to create one with cheap materials. If you don't know what the Flatwoods Monster looks like, check out the following link:

It depends on how big you want the statue to be... you could carve it out of wood, but you would need a big chunk of wood or else you would have to bolt pieces together or something.

You could make it out of stone also... another time consuming and daunting task.

You could make an inner wire skeleton of the shape of the statue and then cover it in fiberglass. If the statue is going to be indoors you could also try paper mache. Just some ideas.

I'm thinking of creating the lower part of the statue with a metal trash can, but I don't know how to do the head.

I think it looks like this...

Hello MIB-Agent!

Ok, first a few quick questions.

Where do you plan on exhibiting your sculpture, indoors or out?
If it is indoors, what is the size of the space? Do you have room to use a metal trash can as the base, unless you cut it down.
What skills, artistic talent do you possess? Can you braze metal? Can you solder? Weld? If you want to work in steel you have to know how to weld, or figure out another way of joining your sculpture together.
Have you considered using copper? Copper can be brazed with a blow torch instead of an arc welder or other type of welding. Brazing can be done without a lot of hassle but there are things to learn about it.
If you think that these ideas are too daunting you might want to consider another medium. Do you plan on doing the total machine look or the half machine or semi-humanoid version?

Regards,
Mabon.

Uh....I'm thinking of donating it to the town of Flatwoods, West Virginia. I have room to use the metal trash can as the base. I have the skills to create certain things using basic and cheap materials. I have brazed metal before, I don't know how to solder, and I know how to weld. But I'm going to use things like super glue to hold it together. I'm not thinking of using those things, or sculpting the base of it. I am wanting to do the total machine look. Thank you for asking these questions because you gave me a few more ideas. happy.gif

Well if your thinking about donating it and size doesn't seem to be a problem. If you know how to weld then most of your process will be finding items to alter. Junkyards and trash dumps would be a great place for 'found' objects to transform.

If I may make a suggestion.... don't use superglue if you know how to weld, for number one the bond won't be lasting, in fact it may not even stick metal to metal (of any substantial weight) for any length of time. You'll want your joins to be as strong, 'as superman's kneecaps' as an art instructor of mine was fond of saying.
I am a great lover of finding objects to turn into something else... here's some images to hopefully get your brain going too! http://images.google.com/images?q=found+ob...es&ct=title

Wanting a total machine look will be very interesting! Especially if you are considering using found objects. Remember too, that your sculpture should have points of interest from all sides and to create a base that will not only support the rest of the piece but not be top heavy and dangerous not only to yourself but others.

Ty Mabon. I'm probably not going to do the Hersheys Kiss helmet look though. I might rip off the facemask of a football helmet or something, because I remember that the Mothman statue has things that weren't described in the sightings. The Mothman Statue has hole-patterns in it's wings, and that wasn't a description of Mothman in the sightings.

I never said that I created it, Rosenrot. I wish I did, but I didn't.
