There are some who believe that mistakes we made in our past lives will haunt the newest one. Sometimes by remembering what had happened can actually help us in this life. It is when we are obssessed with a past life that we lose perspective on this life.
I agree to a point. I do think what happened in our past lives can help us with our current lives but I think it can do more harm than good in most cases. Knowing too much about our past lives can actually hinder our current lives. I'll try to give an example to explain this.
We have many soul mates. A soul mate isn't what many people think. It's not a person you're destined to spend your life with. It's another soul that we have agreed to meet in another life to balance our karma. That's why we feel such a strong connection to certain people. We have interacted with them in some other life and that interaction has led to an imbalance in our karma. We must meet them again to acheive that balance. This is where it can go wrong.
Say we meet a person and feel a very strong connection to that person. Wanting to know how we know them we come to find out that is someone we have murdered in a past life. Knowing that something must happen to erase that debt we avoid this person at all costs for fear that we might be the murdered party in this lifetime. There is no hardfast "eye for an eye" rule when it comes to karma. Because you have taken the life of someone in a past life that does not mean that your life will be taken from you now. You may save this person from choking, or a drug addiction that threatens their life, or help them in some other way that saves their life and your debt is repaid. By not paying this debt in your current life you can keep yourself from growing and learning and clearing your negative karma. It may also keep other from repaying their debts to you and you become responsible for hindering the growth of others.
It's fine to be curious. Everyone wants to know who they are or were. For the most part it should be left alone. If you pay attention to what is going on in your current life you can see what you should be working on and what you need to do. It's not some hidden secret you need to unearth. It's as plain as the nose on your face. Becoming too worried about the past can cloud our vision and cause us to repeat the mistakes we should be avoiding.
