The Malay word for ghost is "Hantu"
Hantu Galah, the Tall Ghost. Is said to appear as a normal human when you first see it, but as you walk towards it, it would suddenly grow taller and taller, until a point where you can only see it's legs. It is said you should never glance up or your head would be stuck like that forever. You should never walk between the legs or it'll squeeze you with the legs. This had been reported in Singapore too, walking around in apartment's corridors. A story told by my friend was that his friend saw a pair of very long legs walking across the corridor outside his flat (legs only) for 15 minutes.
Pocong, it appears as a human shape tied from head to toe in a white cloth, with knots at various points along the body. In Malay culture during a burial, the knot on the head should be untied to allow the spirit to come out of the body. If somehow no one remembers to untie the knot, the deceased returns as a Hantu Pocong asking people to untie the knot. It moves by hopping around (very fast) or rolling on the ground (yikes!). If you untie the knot, I was told, that the Pocong will grant you your demands, in exchange for something (not sure what, but it's not going to be nice). If you don't it will pursue you. Best was is to run in zigzag and never look back for if you do, the next thing you know pocong will be infront of you. It can jump or roll after you. Definitely not good.

hereOrang Minyak - There are several version of the orang minyak (literally means 'oily man'). According to history, Satan offered to help and grant worldly desires if the "orang minyak" raped 21 girls within seven days and worship Satan as a God. During the 1960s, the orang minyak existed around several towns of Malaysia raping young women. They covered their nude body with oil so that it would be difficult for anyone to catch them. Although the orang minyak of the 1960s were definitely human, there were countless stories of the orang minyak that was related to the supernatural as well as black magic.
Pontianak - Perhaps the most famous, scariest and violent ghost in the Malaysian culture. Primarily, the Malays believe that it originates from a still born child, women who dies while giving birth, women who were killed by the pontianak or their spirits captured by them. The phrase "Pontianak" was believed from the acronym of "Perempuan Mati Beranak" in the Malay language, meaning the woman death by childbirth. Pontianak sometimes is said to appear as a white bird and is characterized by the screeching sound it makes and is sometimes known to produce fragrances. One strange thing is, accoridng to pipular belief, when she sounds very near, she is actually very far away. And when she sounds far away, she is just nearby.
Langsuyars - The original Langsuyar was a beautiful young woman in green garb with long finger nails and ankle length black hair which concealed an opening in her neck through which she would drink the blood of children. This act was one of jealousy originating from the langsuyar having given birth to a still born before she became a monster. According to Malay mythology this child then became the Pontianak. which assumed the form of a night owl; a trait shared by its mother.
