Drug Warning - Beware and please inform your children

I have been alerted by one of our EMT's for our volunteer fire department that they have received emails from emergency responder organizations to be on the lookout for a new form of Crystalized Meth that is targeted at children and to be aware of this new form if called to an emergency involving a child that may have symptoms of drug induction or overdose.

They are calling this new form of meth "Strawberry Quick" and it looks like the "Pop Rocks" candy that sizzle in your mouth. In it's current form, it is dark pink in color and has a strawberry scent to it.

Please advise your children and their friends and other students not to accept candy from strangers as this is obviously an attempt to seduce children into drug use. They also need to be cautious in accepting candy from even friends that may have received it from someone else, thinking it is just candy.

Origins: This warning about sweetened and flavored forms of methamphetamine began landing in inboxes in April 2007. Unfortunately, there's a great deal to it: candied meth is the latest Flavored Meth thing in street drugs, first reported as appearing in the western states in January 2007. (Nevada holds the dubious honor of being the first state the substance was found in — its Department of Public Safety issued a bulletin about flavored meth seized during a 27 January 2007 search of a gang member's apartment in Carson City.)

The colored crystals have reportedly since spread across the nation. According to intelligence gathered by Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agents from informants, users, local police, and drug counselors, flavored meth is available in California, Nevada, Washington, Idaho, Texas, New Mexico, Missouri, and Minnesota. (The various reports of candy meth seizures appear to be scattered and somewhat anecdotal so far, however, so gauging the true prevalence of this form of drug is difficult at this time.)

The e-mailed alert might lead you to believe you need only look out for "Strawberry quick." (The name is reminiscent of strawberry Quik, a powder used to make flavored milk drinks.) Yet that form of
the drug is but one of many flavors in circulation: In addition to strawberry, crystal meth also comes in chocolate, peanut butter, cola, cherry, and orange versions. One DEA agent reported a red methamphetamine that had been marketed as a powdered form of an energy drink. Says DEA spokesman Steve Robertson, "Drug traffickers are trying to lure in new customers, no matter what their age, by making the meth seem less dangerous."

While it is not clear that flavorings have been added to meth for the express purpose of making the drug appeal to children (it seems more likely they were incorporated as a way of combating the substance's bitter taste or of creating a superficial 'brand' distinction), law enforcement officials fear that "candied" versions of meth will nonetheless have that effect. Flavored meth has been described as resembling rock candy or Pop Rocks (a kid-favored confection that fizzles in the mouth). Because it looks, smells, and tastes like candy, flavored meth may fool children and teens into perceiving it as far less dangerous and addictive than it actually is. How can, after all, anything that looks that tasty and inviting be as evil as the grownups make it out to be? The new versions also present an increased risk that children who happen upon stashes of the drug will mistake their finds for candy.

In April 2007, U.S. Senators Feinstein and Grassley introduced legislation aimed at increasing the criminal penalties for anyone who markets or makes candy-flavored drugs by imposing upon them the same enhanced criminal sentences handed down to drug dealers who knowingly sell to minors. The Saving Kids from Dangerous Drugs Act would alter federal law from its current state of requiring doubled (or tripled for a repeat offense) sentences for those caught selling illegal drugs to those under the age of 21 to imposing doubled or tripled sentences on anyone who "manufactures, creates, distributes, or possesses with intent to distribute a controlled substance that is flavored, colored, packaged or otherwise altered in a way that is designed to make it more appealing to a person under 21 years of age, or who attempts or conspires to do so." No longer would a dealer have to be caught red-handed in the act of selling to an under 21 for the doubled or tripled sentences to kick in; under the proposed refinement to current law, simply possessing flavored versions of street drugs would be enough. Also, by the lights of this rewriting of the law, manufacturers of flavored drugs would also be subject to doubled or tripled sentences.

There is one bit of good news in all this: Methamphetamine use is down for much of the country for the second year running. Researchers say it appears this latest meth epidemic reached its peak in 2004 and 2005, and data from the federal government shows the number of first-time meth users has steadily declined in recent years.

Let's hope that Strawberry Quick doesn't serve to reverse that trend.

I didnt expect drug users to make candy flavored drugs. But then again, I dont think its hard to rule out that possibility since the meth cooks have to know some stuff about chemicals.

I am horrified! To seduce kids into the drug scene? I am in shock, man does that scare the crap out of me.

Unfortunatley we have had that around here for quite some time. I swear this county must hold the title for bathtub meth. I hate to tell people where I live because they asccociate this county with meth heads. It is horrible to see people you grew up with strung out on that crap.

Ehhh I thought this was all ready around? Even if it hasn't flavored marijuana has been around for a while. Saying that this is marketing meth at children in crap, I sincerely doubt anyone's going to try meth just because it's flavored.

Also, the responsibility of use is up to the user, not the drug dealer. Drug addicts who blame drug dealers are simply looking for someone to blame for their bad choices.

ME THS IS THE WORST, ANY DEALER FOUND DISTRIBUTING IT SHOULD GET THE GAS CHAMBER yes.gif

Thats very true, most drug dealers i know dont hang around schoolyards looking for kids and dont have to look for customers, the drug users always go to them. also why then is the drug buisness the 3rd largest buisness in the world and thats not from selling to kids for thier lunch money.
people choose drugs, probably a bad decision but thier decision all the same.
a_blue_fish
Oh, lovely. It's in Idaho, according to that. And since I live in pretty much meth lab central I'm positive there's probably some floating around within ten miles of me. ;_;
This is awful. It reminds me of the cigarettes that are pink or whatever that are obviously tyring to attract those under 18.

They don't tell the kids it's Meth right away. They get them to try it first by saying it's candy.
nativechick1989
Geez..that sux..to targets kids like that.

That sounds like anti-drug propaganda, honestly I'd imagine very few children would be able to even afford meth, it's expensive stuff.

Well, I guess this new Candy version of meth would be easier to conceal because it looks like well... candy. So if some kid finds this in his mom's drawer and eats it, BAM we have an addict .

Do you remember when the acid in the shape of Disney characters was going around? That little ploy was to make it more attractive to younger people. Also, how do you think an "addict" gets that way? Who do you think usually supplies them with their first hit of acid, cocaine, ect.? Drug dealers.
Remember, the first hit is free, then they come back to buy more when they're hooked. Without dealers, where would the users get their fix?

OH MY GOD!!! People have no decency these days. If they want to be a drug attics, I don't care. But how dare they make a kid friendly drug!

You can't get addicted off one hit and I don't know very many drug dealers that go around giving out free samples, it's not washing powder.

Regardless of how they obtain the drug, the choice to use drugs still remains that of the user, not the dealer. I don't know whether this applies to your or not, but most people who don't use drugs have a lot of misconceptions about drug dealers etc from the movies and television shows they watch.

As for acid and Disney characters, it kind of goes hand in hand doesn't it? Most of the time the markings on blotter are used to identify batches, not to sell the drugs themselves. Just because an ecstasy has a Mercedes logo on it, doesn't mean everyone who likes Mercedes is going to go out and take one. You'd have to be pretty damn suggestible for a picture on a drug or a flavor it's available in to make you consume it.
Bill Hill

It's about time too. Who remembers the original flavor of stomach settler tablets; thank god, they added candy flavors!

It's cheap to make,so I imagine they could lower the price enough if kids start doing it until they are entirelty addicted and willing to steal money from their parents.

You must live in central Canada or the East..cause I live in BC and its already here and on my street..

The RCMP don't even bother with them due to the poor processing of the courts so the has been a large case of vigilant response..
This is one drug like no other folks..they will lie soo much they believe anything and they are a new type of obsessive compulsive, and target children as low as the age of 10.

This is the new heroine people only this time it won't run out..since it is made from over the counter products,like..Acetone, rat poison Iodine crystals and WD40 etc...

Be aware of this drug, for your sake and the sake of the world...Zombies are in the makin as we speak and the catalyst is Crystal Meth.
