My dad lives in Alaska, and I have been able to see these first hand. They are absolutely amazing to witness. The first time I had seen them was a good 10 years ago and I remember thinking that it was similar to watching a fireworks show only very relaxing. Quite hypnotic.

I could understand how people from centuries ago would get so worried about the lights, it is unlike anything else I have ever seen. If you ever get a chance to go far enough north to see them, go for it...

Great pictures. Hope I get a chance to witness them for real.

Great pictures. Hope I get a chance to witness them for real.

It's a recorded fact that the Earth's magnetic field flips approximately every 200,000 years. According to scientists', we're overdue, having been without one for about 700,000 years, and sure enough, monitoring of the field has revealed a definite continuing weakening. When it reaches minimum strength (this could take hundreds of years or more) aurora borealis should be visible pretty much all over the world.

So unless you're expecting to live to 500, you'd better get up north if you want to see 'em. I definitely plan on doing that someday. thumbsup.gif

Oh, and beee-yootiful pics, Journey. thumbsup.gif

I've seen the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) while staying at Flin Flon, Manitoba, Canada. I was outside of the building during the day of my cousin's birthday party.

Bluish in colour, kinda like one of the pictures in the link.

Stood outside watching, amazed by its appearance, but seeing how i was drunk i couldn't quite grasp its true wonderous nature. Only if i could turn back the time, i'd take my dad's camera and photograph it.

Anyways, nice pictures you've got shown.
