It's a recorded fact that the Earth's magnetic field flips approximately every 200,000 years. According to scientists', we're overdue, having been without one for about 700,000 years, and sure enough, monitoring of the field has revealed a definite continuing weakening. When it reaches minimum strength (this could take hundreds of years or more) aurora borealis should be visible pretty much all over the world.
So unless you're expecting to live to 500, you'd better get up north if you want to see 'em. I definitely plan on doing that someday.
