to me, religion is what's written in the Holy Book Kor'an.

in time, people added some things into practice, they even changed the books and new generatios took them as if they were said by the Creator. so, finally religion is a dividing subject.
IMO, society is the worst guidance for it. because today, what we call 'religion' is more like what society says and it is a lie.

I think religion is people's beliefs about the universe and the philosophy they live by. It is more than what is written in religious texts. Some of people's beliefs come from religious texts and some of their beliefs come from traditions.

I define religion as a way to control the masses created by men because of a lack of knowledge.

Slightly modified from dictionary.com, when I think of religion I think:

A cause, principle, or activity pursued with zeal or conscientious devotion

And

a set of beliefs usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing conduct

to me there is nothing "supernatural" or "paranormal" needed to "be religious" which is not the same as being "spiritual" but maybe closer to superstitious
brave_new_world
Religion to me is the means of increasing one's awareness of reality.

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

Races of people have had to adapt to the circumstances that surround them. They made camp and survived using the available resources. Religion, to me, is a drawing force to the existence of a higher ideal. And to match that higher ideal, lower ideas must guide.
Never_Hit_Nirvana
Religion is the way to control large of amounts of people and limit their behaviors. Organized dogmatic laws controlling the masses, basically.
Now to answer what I think the OP was asking...
Spirituality is what you believe, -- your attachment to the Divine, or Enlightenment whatever you want to call it -- and what controls your, and your's alone, behavior. Yeah, even atheists have a form of spirituality, whether they want to admit it or not. LOL.

Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people.

Hey Lava ,

I just posted this on another thread :

On one hand , Religion (to me) is a Concept . A Notion of Reality . The very Knowledge of myself , and my Connection to my creator . It is a pure Thought . Just a Thought .

On the other hand , all the endless rituals , carnavals , cults , or any " symptoms " of religions are constructed systems . Sometimes benefitting a group over some other groups .
